Hello everyone, As you already now, we had a work meeting for the free e-mail association last night. We decided that it is a good idea to found the association before FSCONS. This was deemed a too big of an opportunity to miss. This means that we hastily need to get together for a founding meeting. Our suggestion is to meet November 4, 18:00 at Gnutiken. We wish to suggest the following points for that meeting: - membership fee: 300 SEK means we need 50 members to reach 15000 SEK - domain name: fripost.org is available For FSCONS we wish to have the following: - Possibility to join the association for all Swedish attendants - Possibility to sign up for membership via a list (pay later) - Promotional material (Gustav is already working on this) Having a founding meeting now also means we will have an annual meeting early next year where we will discuss among other things the declaration of principles. For now, the by-laws will have to do. Gustav has written notes from our meeting last night that he will write and make available on the wiki ASAP. There is a suggestion for a letter below that I think is suitable for spreading this invitation wider. Please voice any objections, suggestions or other thoughts. We will have a founding meeting November 4, 2010 18:00 at Gnutiken. Please see the suggestions for by-laws on the website: http://fellowship.se/wiki/Projekt/friepost We need to elect: a chairman (ordförande), a board (styrelse), an accountant (revisor) and a nominating committee (valberedning). We want to create an alternative to privately controlled e-mail services like Google or Yahoo mail where the users' freedom and integrity will always come second to the service providers interests. More concretely, this means we will collaborate around and run a number of mail servers. The associations email service will be free as in free speech, but not as in free beer. Quite the opposite; we will be funded primarily by our membership fees. The association will be democratic and the e-mail service as transparent as possible. To guarantee this, we must be independent from any third parties. We will suggest a membership fee of 300 SEK per year. This means that we need 50 members to reach 15,000 SEK, which is our estimate of what we need before we can begin doing the initial investments. Specifically, we need to buy storage and pay for hosting. The rest can be done by using already donated or otherwise borrowed hardware. We are already running temporary systems that will only need a tad bit more configuring and testing before we are ready to allow the members to start using them. Everyone is free to become a member at the meeting, and everyone who is a member is electable for the board. There will be a nomination process during the meeting, and the elections will be done by a secret ballot. To achieve a sufficient level of reliability, we need to do some investments in hardware and hosting. This means we need members. The problem is that some people might be less willing to join until everything is up and running. However, we must not let ourselves be trapped by this deadlock. We need to do the opposite of waiting around: now is the time to act. We invite you to join us and share our vision of a user controlled email service. All interested parties, whether they know for sure they want to join or not, are welcome to our founding meeting and to visit our presentation at FSCONS. What better place than here? [Göteborg] Free E-mail Association -- Meeting October 28

Hello everyone, This Thursday (October 28) we have decided to meet to discuss the Free E-mail Association. We will meet at Gnutiken at 18:00. I write this e-mail in English to allow for our non-Swedish friends to join the discussion, even if much of the information on the wiki is in Swedish. I do not see this changing any time soon (translation is hard work). Do not hesitate to ask if something is still unclear. I have jotted down a few notes from the last meeting, and put up a suggestion for an agenda (sv: dagordning): http://fellowship.se/wiki/Projekt/friepost/Protokoll There are a few things to think about for this meeting, among others: * What equipment/budget will be necessary? I think we made good progress last time, but please review the notes to make sure I got everything right. * Membership fees. There is an example budget on the Wiki that offers food for thought: http://fellowship.se/wiki/Projekt/friepost/Budget * Is it acceptable to look for external funding, provided that it does not put us in a state of dependence? We have some suggestions for possible sponsors on the Wiki. Since last time there have been progress on the software side of things. Me and Gustav have been hard at work setting up a test system. We have now configured Postfix on two servers. All technical issues and uncertainties have been working themselves out splendidly well thus far. Last Thursday night we were able to relay the first e-mail from our mail gateway to the main mail server. This is obviously not the biggest accomplishment in the history of mankind, but for one thing it goes to show that complicated things like NFS are unnecessary. Not surprisingly, SMTP rocks on delivering e-mail! It looks like propagating valid users/domains from the main server to the mail gateways is best done by keeping everything in a MySQL database on the main storage server that is replicated onto the mail gateways. Technical documentation for all the systems can be found on github.com until we find resources to set up a proper git repository of our own. Me and Gustav are both very fond of Emacs org-mode, which means the docs are in that format. Hoppas ni ser och förstår hur detta är ett problem. Alternativet ni har är naturligtvis att fortsätta publicera PDF men i sådan form som följer den standard som gör att man kan använda en PDF-läsare man själv väljer, som i mitt fall en PDF-läsare som fri programvara (återigen, friheten här har inget med pris att göra, utan enligt länken ovan). This email is in Swedish, sorry about that everyone, but the current state of things is that the free email association we are starting use Swedish as communication language... I do not have the time to translate this now but we can try to present the geist of it in tomorrows meeting as well as answer any questions. Det finns nu tre olika budgetförslag till fria epostföreningen upplagda på wikin: http://fellowship.se/index.php/Projekt/friepost/Budget Vad vi har helt klart (alltså uppe så vi kan ssha till dem idag): Två datorer stående hemma hos Gustav En (äldre) dator stående i Luleå En förteckning över utrustningen vi har och var den står etc. måste sammanställas på wikin. På dessa servrar har vi tänkt börja bygga upp testsystem, alltså systemet som det är tänkt men på "fel" hårdvara. Det är inte helt självklart vad man ska göra med pengarna; hur mycket man bör lägga på t.ex. en raid-controller kan man ju ha olika åsikter om. Själv har jag ganska dålig koll på de bitarna, varför andra bör uttala sig och protestera om det är tokigt. Detsamma gäller UPS. Frågor att fundera på? * Hur hög medlemsavgift kan/vill vi ha? * Är vi som är "tidiga" medlemmar beredda att gå in med någon extra hundralapp för inköp av hårdvara? * Vilken övrig hårdvara kan vi få tag på/låna? Hi, I am a GNU and FreeSoftware fan also a *nix System Administrator since couple of years ago and I just moved to Borås, so was looking for LUGs, UUGs, and FSF fans (activists) around. Then I found "Göteborg FSF-E fellowship Group" through the FSFE web site [1] also there are information around the group and meetings on GNUTiken website [2], I have some questions about your meetings: * Do your meetings running in Swedish or English (Or some thing else)? * Do I need to be a official member of FSFE.org to participate meetings? * I found a address of gnutiken [3] that is "Övre Husargatan 27, Göteborg" [4] is that the place you meet each other? * Do your meetings are formal or they like LUG session (Serious but Geeky!) Hej alla, Nu på torsdag är det dags för höstens första Fellowship-möte. Vi börjar som normalt klockan 18:00 på Gnutiken, Övre Husargatan 27. Inledningsvis kör vi filmen The Yes Men Fix the World klockan 18, och börjar därmed mötet klockan 19. Eftersom de flesta av våra kampanjideer har legat på is under sommaren rekommenderar jag att vi alla kollar på vår wiki ( http://fellowship.se ) och funderar på vad vi har möjlighet att bidra med och därmed också en realistisk chans att genomföra. [Göteborg]Arbete angående fria epostföreningen

Hej! Den 21 juni hade vi ett första möte i Fellowships projekt att starta en fri e-postföreningen Man får anse att projektet börjar ta en seriös form, och på wikisidan på fellowship.se finns möjlighet att följa och delta i arbetet. Ett protokoll från mötet ligger ute, och en ansökan om att få presentera projektet på FSCONS skickas snart in. Lördagen den 3 juli ska vi träffas för en full arbetsdag antingen hos Stefan eller hos mig, och det vore roligt om fler ville vara med. Tanken är att vi ska ta fram texter och riktlinjer angående t.ex. infrastruktur, stadgar, och filosofiska och legala implikationer. Skicka gärna ett e-brev, de som vill vara med så vi vet vilken storlek på lokal och kaffebryggare som behövs. Jag vill också passa på att påminna om Fellowship-träffen imorgon torsdagen den 1 juli. En lista på förberedande läsning till torsdag om ``Software as a Service'' har tidigare skickats ut. Själv kommer jag troligtvis inte kunna delta, tyvärr, men jag ser fram emot att ta del av diskussionens resultat. Ha en fortsatt trevlig vecka! Härliga sommarregnshälsningar, Gustav.
