Hello everyone,
I'm Nik, dutch and I study knowledge engineering in Maastricht. I saw Daniel Pocock's blog post on /r/linux and got interested in participating due to the possibility of decreasing the influence of the likes of skype and whatsapp, especially after the current problems with skype on linux. I browsed through the FreeRTC projects looking for Java issues as I am most comfortable in java. I found both the Jitsi issues and the Apache Camel issue to my liking. I am planning on applying my proposal through the Debian organization but I was not able to make a wiki account yet due to a spam attack.
Kind regards, Nik

For any Debian wiki issues, please try asking for help on the IRC channels and if you don't get an answer, you can send an email. You need to connect to the oftc IRC server and join the #debian-soc and #debian-www channels. You can find out more about contacting the wiki admins here:
https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/DebianWiki
and you can also email the debian-outreach list: https://lists.debian.org/debian-outreach
Regards,
Daniel
Thanks, I've been able to fix the issue and posted my proposal: https://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2016/StudentApplications/NikVaes. I'm not sure if the 3 issues I want to work on is enough or if I need to add another (small) task. If time is permetting (because it already is so close to the deadline) would it be possible to get some feedback?
Kind regards, Nik

Hi Nik,
This could also be done as a Java project, using JSP, servlets or another Java web API:
https://project.freertc.org/projects/rtc-server-probe-development/issues?set...
so please add that to your plan. I would suggest doing things in this order:
1. Camel component 2. Web RTC checker (issue #23 and #24 in Redmine) 3. ICE / TURN related work with Jitsi code (this is actually quite advanced and you may only be able to make incremental improvements to this code, we can discuss in more details on the Jitsi mailing list)
I've also contacted a couple of other very experienced Java developers to see if they may be interested in helping expand your proposal or co-mentoring any part of this. The Google site is locked at the deadline tonight but you will be welcome to put more details about yourself on the Debian wiki after the deadline.
Regards,
Daniel
Hello Daniel,
Thanks for the suggestion. I have added it to my proposal on the wiki and google's site. I have trouble fully understanding the description of the issues in redmine about the WebRTC server probe, however. Could you expand on what exactly it is I need to develop? And what kind of details should I add on the debian wiki?
Kind regards, Nik

The RTC server probe is not just for WebRTC, but also SIP, XMPP, STUN, TURN and maybe others.
It should be similar in concept to the sites that do SMTP MX server probes, e.g. look at this site and type in "pocock.pro":
and in the results, click the "SMTP Test" link next to one of the servers.
On the Debian wiki, you need to describe your project, start with a copy of the details you submitted in the Google site and then elaborate it with anything else that may help us evaluate your project. Hint: look at the list of students selected by Debian in 2015 and then go and see their wiki pages.

Daniel
