Jitsi Videobridge vs Skype?

Some time back, Sam Tuke posted the findings of the FSFE group in Manchester about "the hunt for Skype alternatives". Sadly, at the time the conclusion was that there were no *real* replacements, as Skype handled some things (specifically lagging, I think, and latency - latency used to be a *huge* problem in SIP telephony) exceedingly well. Recently, however, I've been using the public Jitsi videobridge https://meet.jit.si almost daily. It doesn't work with Firefox, but it works with Chromium, most of the time nearly as if there was a hole in the screen to the other person. I'm kind of impressed, and I see fewer problems with the sound etc. that I usually do in Skype for GNU/LInux (which I almost never use - I have to use it sometimes to communicate with customers, though). Does anyone know of any compelling reason NOT to recommend Jitsi Videobridge as a real free alternative to Skype? -- http://www.modspil.dk https://blogs.fsfe.org/agger/

FSCONS in Gothenburg?

Hello everyone! I just realised that the discussion list I had subscribed to before wasn't the same discussion list that now seems to be hosting all the discussion, so I apologise if this topic has already been discussed! Is anyone going to FSCONS in Gothenburg from October 31st until November 2nd? Interestingly, the last mail I seem to have from the other discussion list concerned the call for proposals for FSCONS all the way back in May. Last time I checked, the schedule was still pretty vague, but I imagine that there are plenty of topics of relevance to FSFE supporters. Paul

Metaphors of Free Software

Hi, Metaphors when done right can be powerful to convey an idea. There’s a short article with some good metaphors: http://www.ethicalconsumer.org/ethicalreports/internetreport/whatisopensour… Transparency: a car. An open source license is like having the right to lift your car bonnet to view the engine. If you use software but can’t see what it’s doing behind the scenes, then it’s impossible to know what it’s doing with your data or even if it’s secure. By making code viewable by all, it’s much easier to spot and fix security flaws and bugs, which is why many security standards, such as password encryption, are open source. Modification: a house Open source is like buying a house and being free to decorate it however you want, to build extensions or demolish walls. Closed-source software strictly limits what you can do with it. Accumulative: DNA: Like a genome that keeps evolving, or the way academia builds upon prior knowledge, open source is a way of ‘standing on the shoulder of giants’, by building on what exists, rather than starting from scratch. This applies to everything from the code at the heart of software and powering websites to design elements, which can develop in an accumulative way, with anyone free to improve on the work of those previously. Collaborative: a coop Like a co-op, but without membership. While code authors may still own copyright on their code, by providing an open license, assets are kept public and the user community can offer improvements, fixes, language translations, design improvements, documentation and so on. Eric S Raymond describes open source development as “a great babbling bazaar of differing agendas and approaches out of which a coherent and stable system could seemingly emerge only by a succession of miracles”. Democratic: a landslide Like a democracy where anyone can set up their own country if they don’t like the leader. Open source projects have core maintainers who have the final say over suggestions and contributions from the user community but if they aren’t responsive, people can ‘fork’ the software and build their own ‘branch’. The content management system Joomla, for instance, was forked from Mambo, after its corporate owners started charging developers big fees. CodeWeek.EU - call for participation

Hello everybody! I hope you all had a nice Software Freedom Day last weekend! :) And the next FS related event is already approaching... From Oct 11 to 17, there will be events throughout Europe where kids will learn to code [1]. You will notice that Free Software is not endorsed on the codeweek webpage in any way or form. If Free Software is explained or even mentioned is up to those who conduct the workshops. The good thing is that most organizers will be grateful for any helping hand they can get We would like to encourage everybody to participate in one of the existing events to make sure that Free Software will not remain unknown to these kids. As they are already interested in coding, it would be a shame if they wouldn't learn about Free Software, don't you think? BTW: It's not too late to order promo material [2] for this! :) FSFE's edu-team [3] will be happy to answer questions and concerns and provide guidance or advise. Free Software principles on back of business cards?

I've come across various business cards where people put some message on the back about their product or their vision Has anybody tried this with free software principles? One issue is how to condense the text to fit within the available space - the full DFSG text may not fit but maybe the 4 principles here (just the text in bigger letters): http://fsfe.org/about/basics/freesoftware.en.html An alternative may be to develop a question that people can print and underneath put a link to FSFE, e.g. If the software and apps you rely on are not fully open and transparent with their code, are they serving your best interests or somebody else's? http://fsfe.org/your-best-interests

FSFE Assembly during 31C3

Dear Fellows and friends of FSFE, maybe some of you already have been to the Chaos Communication Congress [1] in Hamburg, Germany, or is thinking about going there this year? It is a big event (~8000 visitors) about IT, internet and society. Many organisations are present in the conference with a so called "assembly" [2]. An assembly is supposed to be an information desk with some space behind to sit and hack and meet for its corresponding organisation. So, what do you think about setting up an assembly for the FSFE this year? As I have seen, a lot of Fellows are coming there anyway and that's what makes an assembly at the CCCongress a good place to gather FSFE Fellows from all around Europe. In addition, every Fellow has a place to go to get some refreshment or sit down and have a good hack. Finally, it is a good chance to let the visitors know about FSFE and what we are doing. "Sounds good, so how do we do that?" First of all, we need volunteers that are motivated to run such an assembly! As you already made your way reading up to here and if you like the idea ... maybe you like to be one of the volunteers? In reward, you will get a T-shirt for sure and a lot of fun with Fellows from Europe. Finally, the word is that volunteering gives you a good karma - something that might be useful for the beginning of next year : ) Please, don't mind: Even if you are volunteering, you still have the chance to see and visit the conference. I gladly agree on individual time-framing for everybody. In general: No one has to take care of any organisation things because I will set up everything, including: - Application - Material - time management - everything else the only thing I need are volunteers that are willing to engage. Being a volunteer for the assembly means to take over one or two shifts. We need shifts for December 27 until December 30 Every day the assembly should be staffed from 12am until 12pm One shift is 6 hours and two persons in charge I will also be at the congress, but I will have some meetings there and that's why I have to be flexible. But, I will spent like the rest of my time at the assembly and I am looking forward to meet as many Fellows as possible. All the other details will be discussed with the final team.
