Commercial use of font with GPL licence

Hello, in IRC I got the hint to ask my questions here. Sorry for my english. I published a true type font under GPL license. You can find it at http://fixedsys.moviecorner.de Today I got an email saying (free translation): > "we want to use your font (f.e. because of the euro sign) > in our pps system. Because of the GPL this is not allowed > for us without payment." I don't understand what his problem is and I don't see problems with using the font in their system if they give a text file with the GPL license with it and install the font on the customer's system. May this company take the font and give it away to customers if the GPL is included and software itself makes use of the font via the OS? The font is not included in the software then, it is not linked. It's just installed as the customer would have downloaded it from my website. Thanks in advance for your answers, Lars Naber

The font would be delivered with the non-GPL-software and and would be installed in the font folder. The customer would be able to do it self too: Download and install the font in the system. So I wonder if LGPL is necessary here because the font is IMHO not linked... it's just delivered with the software. Or do I misunderstand "linking"? Thanks again, Lars Naber

looking for a research grant/scholarship

Hello list members, I am not sure if this is an appropriate enquiry to this list but I am desperately looking for a research grant for my PhD studies at the CCSR (http://www.ccsr.cse.dmu.ac.uk/). I am an ethicist and I intend to do deal with the "free software issue" in my thesis. Does anyone of you know where I can apply for money? I would be grateful for any hint. I am aware of the 6th Framework Programme of the EU Commission. But I suppose there are more programmes/possibilities. Well, as I said, I would be really grateful for any help! Europe IST funding (1900 million euros) discriminates free software!

Hi, 1. First a small introduction to Europe Information Society Fund (IST): IST 2004 will address European policies, strategies and research activities in all areas of the Information Society. There is a IST conference at 15-17 November 2004 in The Hague, Netherlands this is sort of a kick off meeting. What i know of, Call 4 and Call 5 have a funding volume of 1900 Million Euro, probably ALL European based information technology funding is bundled in this IST program. Research institutes get up to 100% sponsoring, companies get up to 50%, free software gets 0% We have started a homepage, forum and Wiki page to changes this! See http://ospro.sf.net One small example: The economical impact of free/open software on economy goes to billions of Euro. The efficiency (financial input versus powerful output) of free software is very high compared to many projects of research institutions or company projects. Imagine how 5 % of the IST fund (95 Million Euro) could empower the European free/open source community: Many man years of efficient free software development. 3. Current state We have started a session #513 on the IST The Hague event, to change the habit of IST to not sponsor free/open source directly (or for example via organizations like fseurope.org). Creative Commons

Hi, I would like to know the FSF/FSFE's position on Creative Commons ( http://www.creativecommons.org ) and how the CC-by-sa 2.0 license (which is copyleft) compares with GFDL 1.2 for text works. I know GFDL and CC-by-sa are not compatible, but I am interested to know the differences and similarities of these licenses (for books/articles and software) according to your views. I am aware that with GFDL each distributor who distributes many copies of a GFDL document must also distribute the GFDL license. With CC, such action is not necessary if the distributer just gives an Internet link to the CC homepage. I think that the "relaxed" terms of CC on the license distribution could be a problem if, for example, the CC website goes down, but I also think that sometimes it might be difficult for someone to distribute the gfdl if, for example, he/she just wants to distribute a very short gfdl article. In addition, I see that some people don't like the idea of having to keep a changelog as gfdl requires, and they seem to prefer the more lightweight cc. In my site (a wiki) I am about to allow per-page copyright terms so that each author can decide between gfdl and cc. (only the sharealike copyleft version). However I would like to know FSF's views on CC before proceeding to allowing more widespread use of CC. Does CC (the copyleft version) effectively protect works released under it? I would like to ask, also, whether a document licensed under CC-by 2.0 (CreativeCommons Attribution license 2.0) can be incorporated in a GFDL text (provided that proper attribution will be included in the text). Finally, I wish to know whether you are considering to provide some form of compatibility between CC and GFDL in the future (for example with a gfdl2 license)? http://fsfeurope.org/documents/wiwo.en.html Towards a "World Intellectual Wealth Organisation" Supporting the Geneva Declaration The Geneva Declaration [1] is an impressive step towards the creation of a broad coalition of people, organisations and countries [2] demanding that the international community re-think the goals and mechanisms for awarding monopoly control over different kinds of knowledge. It offers many constructive, concrete suggestions for changes in WIPO goals, policies and priorities, and provides ample and insightful arguments for redesign of the copyright and patent bargains to better serve the public interest of all of humankind. We are convinced that new answers sometimes require new questions, not more careful repetition of old questions. A World Intellectual Property Organisation will always, understandably, lean towards applying the pre-selected tool-set of monopolisation that it refers to as Intellectual Property; a term that we find to be ideologically charged and dangerously oblivious to the significant differences that exist between the many areas of law that it tries to subsume. While it may look at better, possibly more socially sustainable ways of granting ownership-like monopolies over different forms of knowledge, WIPO will not have an easy time looking for alternative solutions. WIPO is not what we need. We need a World Intellectual Wealth Organisation, dedicated to the research and promotion of novel and imaginative ways to encourage the production and dissemination of knowledge. Granting limited monopolies and limited control over some kinds of knowledge may be part of this new organisations tool-set, but not the only one, and maybe not even the most important one. We endorse and support the Geneva Declaration, and invite its drafters, signatories, and the United Nations to start thinking now not only about what the role of WIPO should be, but rather what kind of organisation we need in its place.
