FSF Europe booth at FOSDEM 2005

Hi all, its FOSDEM time. the Free Software Developers Meeting [1] will take place from 26th to 27th of February, 2005 in Brussels (Belgium). [1] http://www.fosdem.org as in the years before, we are organizing a booth to present the FSF Europe at FOSDEM 2005. Thus we are looking for people who'd like to help us to man the booth on both days. Our main issues will be to talk to people around different aspects of Free Software and of course to sell merchandise material like T-Shirts, GNU Pins and so on. This would be a chance to everybody who'd like to get involved into Free Software issues, as well. IBM patents : good or evil ?

Poland disapproves software patent directive in EU Council With its veto, Poland blocked the final approval of the software patent directive in the EU Council. This means that the directive will have to be discussed again in the Council. Several countries are expected to have changed their mind against software patents since the last discussion in May, where only a thin majority was pro software patents. The FSFE and its associate organisations worked hard on a political level both in Poland itself and in other countries backing Poland in this decision to make the veto possible. http://www.fsfeurope.org/projects/swpat/ 2. First victory for EU and FSFE in Microsoft trial Bo Versterdorf, President of the European Court, has rejected Microsoft's appeal to delay execution of the sanctions. Microsoft has been forced by the European Commission to publish technical information about the interfaces of their Windows Operating System to enable competitors to reach interoperability between their systems and Windows. The fact that the rest of Microsoft's opponents have decided to resign from this case, means that this becomes an even more important victory for the EU Commission and the FSFE. http://www.fsfeurope.org/projects/ms-vs-eu/ 3. Spotting GPL violations

Hi, A piece of software has come to my attention that may be violating the GPL. Details are as follows: - The software is an interface (GUI, intermediary routines) between a proprietary operating system and the Free printing system GIMP-Print. - The company distributing the software is not offering source code, and has not licensed the derivative work under the GPL. - The software can only be downloaded after a 'donation' is received to unlock the download page. - The software is downloaded as a complete package which includes both proprietary and GPL-licensed code. The interface itself is useless without GIMP-Print and was written specifically for it, rather than as an abstract printer interface and GUI. It is also possible to download the Free parts separately. This sounds a LOT like a GPL violation, but I'd be interested to hear what others' first impressions are. I'll post some links to more detailed evidence once the initial batch of responses come in... Regards, Phil

Hi folks, is it allowed to make changes in the GPL down the GPL-Copyright preamble in a licence-file? Isn't it so, that the GPL guarantees us, that all under this preamble has to be free for all? Now I want to change the properties so, that anyone who wants to copy, distribute oder sell my software, has to ask me before. Can I do so, or is this not allowed by GPL? Re: Copyright of GPL / Canges Allowed?

Hi! This is not allowed, of course. Use another license instead. Besides, I think you are looking for a non-free license, arent't you? A license is some kind of refernce where everyone can look up the terms of conditions the license imposes to the license-taker. It is a legal document (I am not a lawyer!). You cannot change this document because you do not have the permissions. If you do so, you are not allowed to call it GNU/GPL anymore. It is like change the constitution until it fits your needs/wishes. Well, aou are free to do it. But it has no legal consequences/impact, it is just your own "self-made-constitution". FSFE stands firm in Microsoft case Microsoft has steadily been soliciting supporters of the European Commission antitrust case to withdraw their support for the Commission by offering a series of financial settlements. The agreement with Sun Microsystems to withdraw has now been joined by financial settlements with Novell and the CCIA, after which they also agreed to withdraw from the case. In light of these developments, the FSFE reaffirms its determination to support the European Commission in the landmark antitrust case, in which a decision is expected soon. This leaves much of the European Commission case depending on the independence and reliability of FSFE, but it also increments the personal and financial resources the FSFE will have to spend. FSFE gains observer status at the WIPO The Free Software Foundation Europe is now officially accredited as observer at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), where it will be working along with others to question the ideology that more monopolisation of knowledge is always good. As announced in the October WIWO statement, FSFE will be working to change WIPO towards a "World Intellectual Wealth Organisation." http://www.fsfeurope.org/projects/wipo/ 3. Intensifying world wide co-operation Earlier last month, Georg Greve contributed a keynote to the Congresso Internacional de Software Livre (CONISLI) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He also used the opportunity to increase communication with the vibrant Brazilian Free Software community and visit several Telecentros in Sao Paulo. The Telecentro movement is currently the largest digital inclusion project in the world and a prime example how Free Software can sustainably and directly empower people. 4. Two FSFE members attending SFScon The LUG Bozen/Bolzano/Bulsan decided to enrich their traditional LinuxDay with the first South Tyrol Free Software Conference (SFScon). This event also addressed people outside the usual target group, for example with a meeting of Wikipedia authors. The FSFE supported this conference with three speeches: Werner Koch talked about "privacy and encryption techniques", and Alessandro Rubini presented "Free Software in teaching" and gave an "Introduction to kernel programming". 5. Other public appearances On 5 November, a seminar on Free Software was organised in Västerås by the local LUG, the Swedish Linux Association and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Mälardalen University. Jonas Öberg gave an introduction about the four freedoms that make software free. At a local event in Genova on 11 November, Alessandro Rubini held a speech about the development process of Free Software. He explained that while collaborative development is good, smaller projects often cannot build up a large community. Still, as long as the software is free, the projects remain useful in their niche problem space even years after development stopped. Several schools participated in the event, and the final discussion brought in the topic of Free Software in education and the problem of software patents.
