man hört in letzter Zeit häufig den Ausdruck »Tivoisierung«. Die meisten wissen aber nicht so genau, worum es dabei geht.
Der folgende Text erklärt nochmal ausführlich, was Tivoisierung bedeutet und welche Bedeutung es für Freie Software hat.

Das Problem von Freier Software ist, dass es dem allgemeinen Normal-Nutzer schwer zu vermitteln ist, warum der Quelltext frei sein sollte. Ein Nichtprogrammierer kann mit der Freiheit, Änderungen an einem Programm vornehmen zu können, nichts direkt anfangen. Er profitiert nur indirekt von der Freiheit, die andere wahrnehmen können. Das Problem ist, dass genau dieses schwer zu vermitteln ist.
Ich habe einen Bekannten, dem ich auch immer wieder vergeblich klar zu machen versuche, dass es bei Freier Software nicht um den Preis geht. Etwas anderes interressiert den aber nicht. Und so wird Freie Software munter mit Freeware in einen Topf gewofen. Und dass man damit kein Geld machen kann ist für ihn eh klar... Leider kann ich dem nur schlecht was entgegensetzen (zumal ich selbst nur ein Hobbyprogrammierer bin, der von Harz IV leben muss). :-(((

Bei den vielen Spezialgeräten scheint es einen Hauptzweck zu geben: Sendungsempfang bei einem Fernseh-Aufnahme-Gerät; Telefonieren beim Mobiltelefon; Waschen bei der gleichnamigen Maschine.
Für einen privaten Haushalt wäre es nachteilig, die Fähigkeit zum Empfang, Telefonieren oder die Garantie der Waschmaschine zu verlieren.
- Ist es eine Zusatzleistung? - Dann ist es kein Problem. Das Gerät und die Software kann man immer noch für andere Sachen nutzen. Oder man kann sich einen anderen Anbieter suchen. Letzteres ist vielleicht auch beim ersten Punkt gegeben.
Hat Du dazu ein Geräte und eine Nutzung im Kopf?
Ich denke immer noch darüber nach, und frage mich, ob hier nicht auch ein praktisches Problem zum Tragen kommt: Als Anbieter möchte ich mich entscheiden, ob ich meinem Dienst einem entsprechenden Gerät anbiete, übers Netz. Wie kann ich das tun? Eigentlich nur, wenn ich einer Komponente des Geräts vertraue, z.B. in Chip gegossene Software. Diese könnte testen, ob die Software meinen Kriterien entspricht und mir das mitteilen.
Die Anti-Tiviosation Klausel des bisherigen GPLv3 Entwurfs scheint also zu fordern, dass a) ein Gerät immer das Abspielen von anderer Software erlaubt. b) Wenn ich meine Dienstleistung abhängig davon anbieten möchte, ob mir die Software passt, ich dafür etwas vertrauenswürdiges, vernageltes ins Gerät einbauen müsste. Und ich müsste an meiner Seite entscheiden.
Als Anwender müsste ich den Einfluss der "Hersteller-Komponente" ausschalten können, um meinen Gerät vertrauen zu können. Vermutlich muss das nach Start meiner Anwendung passieren und hat Konsequenzen für den Entwurf der Hardware.

Vielleicht hätte ich präziser schreiben sollen: "Diese Freiheit ist vorhanden".

Freiheit ist nie absolut und leicht abgrenzbar, es kommt darauf an eine gute Mischung zu finden. Mir geht es um den konkreten Punkt, was den Nutzern hier welche Freiheit in Bezug auf das Gerät bringt, und wie praktikabel und wichtig sie ist.

Bei der Praxis der Änderung, ist es wie bei Autowerkstätten: Wenn ich nur in die Werkstatt eines Herstellers fahren kann, dann ist der Wettbewerb geringer und meist auch die Preise höher.

Es gibt Unternehmen, die einiges an Geld mit Freier Software verdienen, beispielsweise Redhat. Hier gibt es nachprüfbare Argumente. Geschätze 40% der stabilen Software auf Sourceforge wurden von Profis im Hauptberuf, also gegen Gehalt, entwickelt. Siehe 4. Kenntnisse in Freier Software sind durchaus gefragt, bei einer der letzten Übersicht von Heise, stachen zum Beispiel Ruby-on-Rails-Leute raus.

Interessanterweise scheint es aber auch einen breiten Konsens in der Gesellschaft zu geben, dass Einschränkungen der Redefreiheit unter Umständen sinnvoll und sogar wünschnswet sind: z.B. bei Beleidigung, Volksverhetzung oder Aufruf zu Gewalt, sogar im Bereich fiktiver Gewalltdarstellungen[0].
Ebenso sind sicherlich viele Nutzer bereit Einschränkungen Ihrer Freiheiten inkauf zu nehmen (insbesondere wenn sie selber nicht in der Lge sind diese Freiheiten in Anspruch zu nehmen), wenn Hersteller ihnen versprechen, dass sie im Gegenzug bessere Sicherheit, zuverlässigere Systeme und bessere Bedienbarkeit bekommen[1].

Ach, die Schlagseite fand ich eigentlich ganz lustig, sie ist hinreichend weg von der Realität Freier Software.
