Erinnere ich mich richtig, daß das Problem hier in der Diskussions-Liste als Gerücht und als nicht so schlimm abgetan wurde? Oder habe ich da etwas gründlich mißverstanden?
Position der FSF ist jedenfalls, daß INTEL-Prozessoren nicht akzeptabel sind und man dringend alle Projekte fördern sollte, die Freie Software als Ziel haben. Aus dem Blog:

Grundsätzlich finde ich es alle Bemühungen in Richtung freier Hardware sehr begrüßenswert. Nun wird der Talos POWER8 PC sicher kein Schnäppchen, allerdings kann man das vom EOMA68-Projekt auch nicht sagen.
Für das komplette Notebook mit einemn älteren Allwinner-Chip auf dem Leistungsniveau eines BananaPi, ohne Ethernet und ohne SATA-Anschluss, 1200 US-$ zu wollen find ich schon heftig. Wenn man die Einzelteile bestellt und selbst zusammenbaut kommt man immer noch auf 565 US-$.
Abgesehen davon, dass der A20-Chip nicht wirklich frei ist - die Unterstützung der MALI-GPU wird halt nur weg gelassen.
Mal ehrlich, da fahr ich derzeit besser, wenn ich einen ebenso freien FSF-zertifizierten Libreboot X200 für ca. 500 € kaufe. Die CPU ist zwar älter, aber sicherlich zig mal so leistungsfähig wie der A20.
Wenn ich mir zutraue, Libreboot selbst drauf zu machen kriege ich einen refurbished X200 derzeit für 150,-€.
Und die noch halbswegs aktuelle AMD Family 15h, die theroretisch auch Libreboot-tauglich ist, taucht in den besseren Ausführungen immer noch mit in der Spitzenklasse der leistungsfähigsten X86_64 CPUs auf.
Natürlich wird das alles irgendwann hoffungslos veraltet sein, aber ich weiß nicht wie sinvoll es ist, jetzt ein freies System auf Basis eines veralteten und nicht gänzlich freien ARM-Chips zu entwickeln, wenn selbst die alten und (noch) freien X86-Systeme zigmal leistungsfähiger sind.
Da klingt das Talos-System vielversprechender, auch wenn ich da eher auf den POWER9-Chip setzen würde, der 2017 erscheinen soll, denn der POWER8 ist auch schon 2 Jahre alt.

Wenn sie theoretisch Libreboot tauglich ist, warum gibt es dann bisher keinen Rechner mit Libreboot? Vermutlich, weil jemand sich die Arbeit machen muß, um das zu erreichen; und die Arbeitskraft für wirklich freie Projekte ist knapp. Oder gibt es andere Gründe?

Es liegt wie so häufig beim Kunden, ob er sich durch shiny bling bling zum Neukauf verleiten lässt oder nicht. Da kann man als Hersteller auch gegen anwirken. Fairphone macht das ganz gut. Die sagen dir: wenn dein altes Gerät noch funktioniert, nutze es solange weiter wie es geht. Das heisst aber nicht, dass ein neues Gerät unattraktiv sein muss. Im Gegenteil. Als Kunde nachhaltiger und Freier Hardware möchte ich nicht hässliche veraltete Produkte kaufen müssen, die nicht das leisten was ich brauche.

Für einen Endkunden ist das relativ egal ob das Gerät gut reparierbar ist. Die meisten Menschen werden sich das so oder so nicht zutrauen. Und ein iPhone kannst du genauso reparieren wie ein anderes Handy. Was die Kosten einer Reparatur angeht würde ich sogar sagen, dass ein iPhone genauso günstig zu reparieren ist wie ein Fairphone, einfach weil es einen extrem grossen Markt an Handydoktoren gibt.
Was Nachhaltigkeit angeht so finde ich es umso wichtiger, dass grosse Hersteller in die Pflicht genommen werden. Mit einem Nieschenprodukt wie dem Fairphone kannst du eigentlich nur zeigen, dass es auch anders geht. Den Massenmarkt kannst du nur dadurch beeinflussen.

Beim X200 bist du zum Beispiel am unteren Ende was die Leistungsfähigkeit angeht. Willst du darauf visualisieren, musst du wieder Blobs nachladen.

Die Frage ist also, was der Use Case ist, und ich schätze 'mal, dass für viele Anwender die meisten aktuellen Computer etwas überdimensioniert sind.

Und da kann ich sagen, dass auf einem P4 System mit HT das surfen zur Qual wird - wenn man nicht nur Web 1.0 Seiten besucht, sondern auch igrendwas mit Web 2.0, youtube usw. Sogar auf meinem 7 Jahr alten Athlon 64 System bauen sich etliche Seiten quälend langsam auf - und ich benutze schon einen spartanischen Window Manager (kein Desktop Environment).
Auch auf meinem Nexus 7 (2012) Tablet, welches sich ungefähr auf dem Leistungsniveau des A20 befinden dürfte, lassen sich viele Seiten nur noch mit viel Geduld ansehen, so dass ich es kaum noch nutze. (Ich suche noch nach einem Weg, da plain GNU/Linux drauf zu installieren, so dass ich es ohne den Android Überbau nutzen kann)

Ich hatte in den letzten Wochen nur einen P4 zur Verfügung. Surfen ist damit wie du schreibst nur sehr notdürftig möglich.
Um ein paar Videos zu schauen, habe ich mir MediathekView installiert und diese dann in der niedrigsten Quali heruntergeladen. Damit ging es ganz gut.
Für Youtube verwende ich Minitube, das braucht nicht so viel Ressourcen.
Auch auf meinem Nexus 7 (2012) Tablet, welches sich ungefähr auf dem Leistungsniveau des A20 befinden dürfte, lassen sich viele Seiten nur noch mit viel Geduld ansehen, so dass ich es kaum noch nutze. gNewSense hat aber noch einen aktuellen Build für MIPS. RMS hat afaik das Lemote mit einem Libreboot X60 ersetzt.

Für mich sind immer noch die meisten Websites inklusive Youtube usw. auch mit "uralter" Hardware durchaus benutzbar. Allerdings immer weniger, wobei oft gerade Diejenigen die schlimmsten Websites kreieren, welche eigentlich der ganzen Öffentlichkeit verpflichtet wären: z.B Verwaltungen, Universitäten, "Service Public"-Firmen. Das liegt wohl daran, dass sie gleichzeitig zu viel Geld (für einen kontraproduktiven Web-Relaunch) und zu wenig Ahnung (von wichtigen Aspekten des Webdesigns) haben.
Einschneidender als "uralte" Hardware dürften "uralte" Netzwerkverbindungen sein. Die meisten Webdesigner vermuten bei ihren Endkunden (im Gegensatz zu ihren Auftraggebern) wohl ähnlich schnelle Netze wie bei sich selber und merken deshalb gar nicht, wie ineffizient sie kodieren, und dass ihre neuen Sites für viele unbrauchbar werden.
Dabei geht es selten um "Notwendigkeiten" oder Optionen mit Mehrwert, sondern um Gedankenlosigkeit oder Prioritäten, welche sich nur an Mehrheiten, aber nicht Minderheiten orientieren.

Viele moderne Websites versuchen weder das eine noch andere und sind z.B. ohne moderne Javascript-Dialekte nicht benutzbar.
Es geht also nicht in erster Linie um Hardware, sondern um die Missachtung der Freiheit.

Für mich sind immer noch die meisten Websites inklusive Youtube usw. auch mit "uralter" Hardware durchaus benutzbar. Allerdings immer weniger, wobei oft gerade Diejenigen die schlimmsten Websites kreieren, welche eigentlich der ganzen Öffentlichkeit verpflichtet wären: z.B Verwaltungen, Universitäten, "Service Public"-Firmen. Das liegt wohl daran, dass sie gleichzeitig zu viel Geld (für einen kontraproduktiven Web-Relaunch) und zu wenig Ahnung (von wichtigen Aspekten des Webdesigns) haben.
Einschneidender als "uralte" Hardware dürften "uralte" Netzwerkverbindungen sein. Die meisten Webdesigner vermuten bei ihren Endkunden (im Gegensatz zu ihren Auftraggebern) wohl ähnlich schnelle Netze wie bei sich selber und merken deshalb gar nicht, wie ineffizient sie kodieren, und dass ihre neuen Sites für viele unbrauchbar werden.
Dieses Problem haben auch Unternehmen mit intern verwendeter Software. Insbesondere dann, wenn auf Thin Clients oder mit Remotedesktop (o.ä.) auf Servern gearbeitet wird, spielt es eine große Rolle, welche Ressourcen exklusiv dafür abgestellt werden müssen. Für den durchschnittlichen Anwender (der höchstwahrscheinlich leider Windows benutzt), kann ein solches Phänomen auch spürbar werden, nämlich dann, wenn sein Rechner durch das Microsoft-OS künstlich ausgebremst wird (man könnte bspw. für den Start von HDD optimieren, man lässt es aber, damit sich die Kunden neue Hardware (z.B. SSD) kaufen müssen, um arbeiten zu können). Oder schauen wir uns GTA V an: Das Spiel ist in keiner Weise auf Leistung optimiert: Viele der verwendeten Libs haben in Spielen eigentlich nichts zu suchen, was dazu führt, dass das Beitreten zu Sessions (egal ob Singleplayer oder GTA Online) gefühlt ewig dauert. Auch für das Nutzen moderater Grafikeinstellungen braucht man schon eine High-End-Grafikkarte. Und auch CPU-technisch ist das Spiel mit 4 SMT-Kernen auf 4 GHz in einem modernen Prozessor (z.B. Intel Ivy Bridge E) nicht wirklich zufrieden.
Dabei geht es selten um "Notwendigkeiten" oder Optionen mit Mehrwert, sondern um Gedankenlosigkeit oder Prioritäten, welche sich nur an Mehrheiten, aber nicht Minderheiten orientieren.
Hierzu fallen mir Animationen in Software (und nicht nur Websites) ein, die bei Remotedesktopverbindungen die benötigte Bandbreite sehr schnell wachsen lassen. Die Mehrheit der Nutzer (Privatmenschen) möchte möglichst modernes Design und ebendiese Animationen. Für den erwähnten Einsatzzweck über Netzwerke sind sie hinderlich.
Viele moderne Websites versuchen weder das eine noch andere und sind z.B. ohne moderne Javascript-Dialekte nicht benutzbar.
Hier ist aber nicht nur JavaScript das Problem, sondern auch bspw. Adobe Flash (siehe mediathek.zdf.de http://mediathek.zdf.de : Man kann die Seite zwar auch ohne benutzen, aber nicht im vorgesehenen Funktionsumfang).

Was Nachhaltigkeit angeht so finde ich es umso wichtiger, dass grosse Hersteller in die Pflicht genommen werden. Mit einem Nieschenprodukt wie dem Fairphone kannst du eigentlich nur zeigen, dass es auch anders geht. Den Massenmarkt kannst du nur dadurch beeinflussen.
Und wie wären die großen Hersteller in die Pflicht zu nehmen? Auf die Politik werden wir lange warten können.

Das Board für das du wirbst, spielt in der Raspberry Pi Liga. Da kannst du auch nicht wirklich ersthaft mit arbeiten. Power8 oder Power9 wird sicher eine gute Alternative sein. Bei der Herstellung geht es aber nicht um Nachhaltigkeit.
Ernsthaftes Arbeit ist für jedes etwas anderes. - Nachhaltigkeit ist ein sehr weites Feld. Ich habe den Eindruck, daß wir sehr weit in dem auseinander liegen, was darunter zu verstehen ist.

Ich glaube dennoch, dass sich die Mutti die sich das Fairphone gekauft hat, weil es so schön nachhaltig ist, bei einem Defekt zum Handydoktor geht. Und da kostet der Displaytausch vom Fairphone genauso viel wie bei einem iPhone.

Das Gegenteil ist der Fall. Nachhaltigkeit wurde als marketingwirksam erkannt. Dazu hat das Fairphone sicher beigetragen. Auf der letzten Apple Keynote gab es viele Hinweise zu dem Thema.

Der Artikel ist alt und sehr einseitig. Gerade Apple macht sehr viel im Bereich Nachhaltigkeit. Was Mainstream angeht, liegen die ganz sicher weit vorne.

ich habe das Gefühl, dass die ganze Diskussion in die falsche Richtung läuft.
Bei Freier Software sagen wir, dass die Verwendung und Unterstützung derselben keine technische oder finanzielle Frage sei, sondern eine ethische.
Dies muss doch bei Freier Hardware genauso gelten.
Daher ist es doch nicht besonders sinnvoll, hier über die Performance oder dergleichen derselben zu diskutieren.
Es geht doch in erster Linie um die Freiheit. Liegt die Kontrolle weitestmöglich beim Nutzer? Und vielleicht in zweiter Linie noch um Nachhaltigkeit.
Selbst wenn Apple jedoch die Gehäuse seiner Mobiltelefone aus nachhaltig aufgeforstetem Holz schnitzen lassen würde: Insgesamt ist dieses System sehr unfrei und damit auch unethisch.
Und Ästhetik ist doch ziemlich zeit- und modeabhängig. Mal werden kantige Formen als schön empfunden, mal runde. Für den Einen muss das Mobiltelefon zum Style seines Outfits passen, für den Anderen gilt: form follows function.

Die FSF stuft das System als System als "with serious flaws" ein[1]. Abgesehen davon, dass es derzeit kein SoC System gibt, welches keine oder nur geringe Fehler hat.

Das Prinzip der Kompromisse predigt RMS seit Jahren. Wenn man Frei sein will, muss man Einschränkungen in Kauf nehmen. Dann muss man eben alles in der Kommandozeile machen und darf keine Filme auf YouTube schauen.
Mit dieser Position stellt er sich mehr und mehr in die Position des belächelten Aussenseiters.
Mir geht es selbst auch so, dass ich Freie Software und Freie Hardware nur dann nutzen kann/will, wenn sie mich nicht einschränkt.

Freiheit ist leider nicht mit Leichtigkeit zu haben, aber auch nicht mit Feuer und Schwert. Wie oftmals stellt sich das Problem des Übergangs, der meistens eben nicht leicht zu haben ist.
Mal ein Beispiel aus einem anderen Bereich: Wenn ich kein Fleisch aus Quältierhaltung essen will, kann ich Vegetarier werden oder muß (wie bei vielen Lebensmitteln, die kein Dreck sein sollen) bereit sein, einen Preis zu zahlen, der eine akzeptable Aufzucht der Tiere und eine faire Bezahlung der Bauern ermöglicht. Das kann ich, wenn ich meinen Fleischkonsum auf den Umfang reduziere, der auch ökologisch notwendig ist. Was mache ich aber, wenn ich Gast bin und mir Fleisch aus Quältierhaltung vorgesetzt wird?

Die Frage ist, was es wirklich Neues bietet. Olimex macht seit Jahren solche Boards. Ob der PCMCIA Formfaktor jetzt den grossen Unterschied macht, weiss ich nicht.

Hier liegt meines Erachtens ein wichtiger Punkt. Wer gibt die "Bedingungen der realen Welt" vor?
Sind das nicht oft auch die, die zur Erfüllung dieser "Bedingungen" proprietäre Soft- und Hardware bereitstellen. Die ein Interesse daran haben, dass wir uns regelmäßig neue Hard- und Software anschaffen, obwohl die alte noch lauffähig ist und bislang genügt hat.
Ich finde, daher sollten wir auch die Aspekte der Realisiserung der Freiheit diskutieren, denn allein die theoretische Möglichkeit ist zu wenig.
Wenn wir Freie Software fördern, fragen wir doch auch nicht, ob alle Nutzer in der Lage sind, den Kernelquellcode sinnerfassend zu lesen. Oder ist nur die Software frei, die jeder Nutzer mit Gewinn studieren kann?

Fehler sind die eine Sache, Fehler können und müssen behoben werden, und die Nutzer können hierzu ihren Beitrag leisten. Solange Freiheit anstrengend ist, läuft was falsch. Wenn Freiheit selbstverständlich ist und mit Leichtigkeit angenommen werden kann, haben wir es geschafft.
Freie Software ‚Kämpfer‘ kommen mir manchmal so vor wie extreme Christen, die sich selbst mit der Peitsche geisseln. Dazu möchte ich zumindest nicht gehören.

Da sind dann auch die Verlockungen der Unfreiheit viel zu groß. Du brauchst dich um nichts zu kümmern, andere machen das für dich. Du brauchst keine Verantwortung zu tragen, andere machen das für dich. Du brauchst dich nicht zu informieren, das haben andere schon für dich erledigt.
Das Versprechen, es gäbe eine "bequeme" Freiheit, ist Trug und soll den Menschen die Freiheit nehmen!
Freie Software ‚Kämpfer‘ kommen mir manchmal so vor wie extreme Christen, die sich selbst mit der Peitsche geisseln. Dazu möchte ich zumindest nicht gehören.
Ich finde Flagellanten auch ein bisken merkwürdig, zumal ich den Bezug zur Freiheit nicht ganz sehe, aber das Freiheit nicht wirklich bequem ist, kann auch und gerade in schweizer Geschichtsbüchern nachgelesen werden.

Ich denke Freiheit muss belastend sein. Es ist wie mit der "Tragödie der Allmende": es gibt zwangsläufig Kräfte, welche bestrebt sind, von der Allmende oder eben auch der Freiheit auf Kosten der Allgemeinheit zu profitieren. Das heisst die Öffentlichkeit muss ständig wachsam sein und diese Profiteure in die Schranke weisen, *bevor* diese zu mächtig werden. Das ist belastend, ein dauernder Kampf.
Aus meiner Sicht geht dieser Kampf langsam verloren, weil zu wenig Menschen sich dessen Wichtigkeit bewusst sind oder noch schlimmer dem Sirenenklang der Mächtigen längst verfallen sind. Deshalb haben Firmen wie Apple, Microsoft, Facebook oder Google leichtes Spiel. Wobei diese harmlos sind im Vergleich z.B. zu den Waffen-, Finanz-, Rohstoff- oder Energiefirmen samt ihren Zudienerinnen.

Der Startbeitrag für diese Diskussion stammt ja von mir, dennoch habe ich selbstverständlich keine Hoheit über die Beiträge. Schön, daß Du die Diskussion anregend fandst.
Leider ist auch mir nicht bekannt, unter welcher Lizenz die Beiträge stehen. Vielleicht kann das mal jemand klären. Meine stehen unter CCO, vielleicht äußern sich auch andere dazu. Du kannst auch gerne meine persönlichen Daten angeben, auch weil die Liste ja sowie so öffentlich ist. Um aber keine Schwierigkeiten zu bekommen, man muß leider ja heutzutage immer mit dem Schlimmsten rechnen, sind saubere Zitate vermutlich die sicherste Lösung. Das Urheberperönlichkeitsrecht erlaubt es meiner Kenntnis nach (Michael, du bist gefragt) aber auch, das Zitat eines Beitrags zu verweigern.

Ich sehe es dennoch anders als du. Ich finde es immer schwierig wenn man sich auf eine Position 'Ich und Die (meistens bösen) Anderen" stellt. Gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen kann man dort sehr gut lösen wo sie entstehen. Ein Ansatz wie bei den Galliern funktioniert meist nur in Comics oder wie schon geschrieben als mahnender Zeigefinger. Das finde ich, wie du auch erkannt hast, sehr anstrengend und ist nicht (mehr) mein Weg. Aber natürlich ist es wichtig, dass wir Menschen wie dich haben, die genau diese Position einnehmen.
Ein weiteres Beispiel: ich bin politisch in der FTP aktiv, eine Partei von der ich früher immer gesagt hätte, dass ich mit denen nichts zu tun haben will. Aber dort kann ich richtig was erreichen, viel eher als z.B. bei den Piraten, deren mahnender Zeigefinger mittlerweile nur noch ignoriert oder belächelt wird. Das ist übrigens auch eine Erkenntnis Peter Sunde für sich gewonnen hat.

Es geht nicht um "ich und die" sondern um "wir alle", und ob unsere Meme (z.B.Verstand, Bildung, Geschichtsbewusstsein und Zivilisation") uns genügend vor einiger unserer Gene schützen können, z.B. zu viel Aggressivität, Egoismus, usw. usw..
Gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen kann man dort sehr gut lösen wo sie entstehen.
Eben nicht! Die ganze Welt ist hochgradig verhängt und alles hat auf alles andere einen Einfluss, wobei viele der Zusammenhänge unbekannt sind. Bei divergenten Zusammenhängen genügt eine kleine Änderung, um riesige Änderungen anderswo auszulösen (sog. Schmetterlingseffekt).

Schön dass FTP noch Anhänger hat :-) . Ich bin bei der GPS (eindeutig zweideutig :-) ).
Eine parteipolitische Diskussion wäre hier wohl fehl am Platz, besonders da Freie Software eigentlich allen Parteien etwas zu bieten hätte. Ich finde es jedoch merkwürdig, dass oft linke oder grüne Parteien sich stärker für Freie Software einsetzen, als Parteien mit "Frei" im Namen, wie die FDP (S), bei der du wohl bist. Wobei vielleicht liege ich falsch und das war nur mal so, denn ich laufe auch bei der GPS, SPS und ihren Zweigstellen immer auf, wenn ich mich für FS und gegen Abhängigkeiten zu den grossen IT-Firmen einsetze.

Dass es nicht unbedingt zur "Tragödie der Allmende" kommen muss, hat ja schon die Wirtschaftsnobelpreisträgerin [1] Elinor Ostrom nachgewiesen [2]. Wenn Menschen vernünftige Spielregeln aufstellen, werden Ressourcen nicht zwangsläufig durch Einzelne ausgebeutet. Ostrom zeigt auch, dass das keine Utopie ist, sondern an etlichen Stellen praktiziert wurde und wird.
Deswegen wäre ich auch, was die Freiheit betrifft, nicht allzu pessimistisch. Vor 20 Jahren hätten wohl nur wenige erwartet, dass sich freie Software überhaupt so weit durchsetzen würde. Dass nun von neuen Akteuren und auf neue Weise versucht wird, die Freiheit einzuschränken, war wohl zu erwarten. Insofern hast Du recht - es ist ein bisschen zermürbend. Trotzdem machen mich die Erfolge der vergangenen Jahrzehnte optimistisch, dass der Trend auch jetzt nicht zwangsläufig in Richtung Unfreiheit gehen muss.

Die Frage ist aber, wir wir hier und jetzt freie Soft- und Hardware nutzbar machen können. Können wir das überhaupt unter den derzeitigen Bedingungen? Mit Geräten, die immer abgeschoteter werden (zB nicht abschaltbares SecureBoot), einem Netz mit wenigen Olipolisten (Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Facebook), die auch dieses immer weiter abschotten und Daten sammeln?
Oder müssen wir letztendlich eine parallele Infrastruktur aufbauen, mit eigenen Rechnern und einem eigenen Netz? Welche Zukunftschancen hätte dies? Das ist auch eine Diskussion, die ich gerne führen würde.
Ich finde, daher sollten wir auch die Aspekte der Realisiserung der Freiheit diskutieren, denn allein die theoretische Möglichkeit ist zu wenig.
Wenn wir Freie Software fördern, fragen wir doch auch nicht, ob alle Nutzer in der Lage sind, den Kernelquellcode sinnerfassend zu lesen. Oder ist nur die Software frei, die jeder Nutzer mit Gewinn studieren kann?
Das ist eine ganz andere Diskussion. Nicht jeder Nutzer kann jede der 4 Freiheiten für sich nutzen, das räumt auch RMS ein. Zumindest aber eine der vier Freiheiten sollte jeder Nutzer nutzen können.

Mein Ansatz wäre eher die vorhandenen Strukturen zu verbessern. Tendenzen dazu gibt es viele, und auch Möglichkeiten. Google ist zum Beispiel einer der Hauptsponsoren von OpenPower. Und selbst Apple und Microsoft engagieren sich mittlerweile im Bereich Freier Software.
Kleine Alternativprojekte sind durchaus auch wichtig, können letztendlich aber wohl nur einen Impuls geben und zum Nachdenken anregen. Alternativ können sie konkrete Nieschenmärkte füllen, wie es zum Beispiel bei Novena oder Pyra der Fall ist.

Zwar sind nicht unbedingt neue Erkenntnisse dabei herausgekommen; aber wichtige Gedanken wurden für die aktuelle Diskussion reaktiviert.
Freiheit hat nicht nur eine individuelle, sondern auch auch eine soziale und politische Dimension.
Unternehmen verfolgen nicht nur wirtschaftliche, sondern auch gesellschaftliche und politische Interessen, die dem Bedürfnis nach individueller Freiheit und Selbstbestimmung entgegengesetzt oft entgegengesetzt sind. Denn wirtschaftlich sind abhängige Kunden (und Lieferanten) attraktiv.
Welche Konsequenzen dies für uns als Einzelne oder als Gruppe hat, werden wir immer neu diskutieren müssen. Dabei wird der Grad der Radikalität Einzelner - nicht nur was Worte, sondern auch was Taten angeht - sicherlich unterschiedlich sein.

Das ist leider untertrieben, weil für mich bei wirklich Freier Hardware die Freiheit schon bei der Gewinnung der Rohstoffe beginnt und bei der Entsorgung endet. Egal, wo man beim Lebenszyklus der Hardware hinschaut, findet man nicht akzeptable Zustände. Die Aufgabe ist also gigantisch und wird nicht gelöst werden, wenn einem schickes Aussehen oder 500g weniger Gewicht wichtiger sind als die Freiheit.

Im Gegensatz zur Reparatur (mag diese auch noch so einfach durchzuführen sein), traue ich das den mündigen Kunden durchaus zu.

Das sehe ich kritischer: Firmen wie Google. Microsoft und Apple fördern Freie Software nicht, weil sie an der Selbstbestimmung und Freiheit der Leute interessiert sind, sondern weil das ihrem _gegenwärtigen_ Geschäftsinteresse entspricht, was ja nichts Verwerfliches ist. Ändert sich das, wird auch die Förderung aufhören. Ein Beispiel für solche Förderung ist ja z.B. der Google Summer of Code. Man sollte sich nie zu abhängig von diesen Unternehmen machen, sonst steht man auf einmal ohne ausreichende Mittel da. Die Nutzung der Mittel dieser Firmen sollte immer oberhalb der für das Projekt mindestens notwendigen Mittel liegen. Daß es den Unternehmen nicht um den Aspekt Freiheit bei Freier Software geht, kann man leicht erkennen, wenn man sich das vollständige Geschäftsgebaren der Unternehmen anschaut: Ausforschung der Nutzer, Vendor Lock In, Privatisierung öffentlicher Daten, Zensur, Rechtsstreitigkeiten, Produktion von Hardware unter unmenschlichen Bedingungen, Steuer-"vermeidung". Wenn die Unternehmen die angemessen Steuern zahlen würden, wäre vielleicht auch genug Geld da, Freie Projekte öffentlich zu fördern. Das stünde einer Demokratie gut an. Wenn man sich z.B. das vorgeblich wohltätige Gebaren von Herrn Gates anschaut, kann man auch z.B. im medizinischen Bereich sehen, daß da Interessen verfolgt werden, die zu mindestens nicht meine sind.
Kleine Alternativprojekte sind durchaus auch wichtig, können letztendlich aber wohl nur einen Impuls geben und zum Nachdenken anregen. Alternativ können sie konkrete Nischenmärkte füllen, wie es zum Beispiel bei Novena oder Pyra der Fall ist.
Ja. Wichtig sind insbesondere auch Projekte, bei denen es gelingt, auf der Basis Freier Software Unternehmen erfolgreich zu betreiben. Ich habe da z.B. einen Bericht von posteo gelesen (link kann ich raussuchen), aus dem sich ergab, daß die ziemlich vorbildlich sind; auch weil sie Eigenentwicklungen an die Community zurück geben.

Bei den Unternehmen arbeiten auch nur Menschen wie du und ich. Besonders bei den new economy Firmen wirst du viele Menschen treffen, die Freie Software Verfechter sind. Sie tragen zu einem positiven Geist im Unternehmen bei. Auch als Kunde kann man dazu beitragen, indem man positive Entwicklungen auch entsprechend würdigt. Dadurch werden Entwicklungen wie die Förderung von Nachhaltigkeit und Freier Software zur selbstverständlichen Unternehmenskultur. Selbst wenn dahinter zunächst durchaus rein kapitalistische Interessen stecken mögen, bei der nachfolgenden Generation stehen diese sicher nicht mehr im Vordergrund. Für die folgende Generation werden diese Aspekte einfach selbstverständlich dazu gehören.

Habe ich von Humanismus geschrieben? Das sind ganz einfach praktische Gründe. Mit Freier Software lässt sich viel besser und schneller zusammenarbeiten (und so auch besser Geld verdienen). Da muss ich (leider) zustimmen. Vielen Firmen machen viel für Freie Software, aber aus den falschen Gründen. Alphabet und Facebook sind da die besten Beispiele, denn sie verwenden Freie Software als Vehikel, um Menschen in irgendeiner Form zu manipulieren und auszubeuten. Natürlich erlauben die vier Freiheiten das, moralisch verwerflich darf man es mbMn aber dennoch finden.

Stimmt natürlich. Ich unterscheide aber einen Beitrag, der es möglich macht, daß gewünschte System auf den Weg zu bringen, und den Preis, den es danach kostet.
Ich finde, daher sollten wir auch die Aspekte der Realisiserung der Freiheit diskutieren, denn allein die theoretische Möglichkeit ist zu wenig.

Ich habe aber auch den Aspekt der Freiheit angeschnitten und gesagt, dass der A20 SoC eben nicht frei ist und dies seitens des EOMA68 Projekts nur dadurch kaschiert wird, dass die unfreien Bestandteile nicht genutzt werden. Die FSF stuft das System als System als "with serious flaws" ein[1]. Abgesehen davon, dass es derzeit kein SoC System gibt, welches keine oder nur geringe Fehler hat.
Ich sehe nicht, dass das kaschiert wird. Das Problem wird doch offen angesprochen und nach der begründeten Hoffnung so gelöst, daß eine RYF- Zertifizierung möglich ist. Dabei ist wohl entscheidend, daß man die unfreien Bestandteile nicht uninformiert nutzen darf.

Bei Freier Software sagen wir, dass die Verwendung und Unterstützung derselben keine technische oder finanzielle Frage sei, sondern eine ethische.
Dies muss doch bei Freier Hardware genauso gelten.
Daher ist es doch nicht besonders sinnvoll, hier über die Performance oder dergleichen derselben zu diskutieren.
Es geht doch in erster Linie um die Freiheit. Liegt die Kontrolle weitestmöglich beim Nutzer? Und vielleicht in zweiter Linie noch um Nachhaltigkeit.
Selbst wenn Apple jedoch die Gehäuse seiner Mobiltelefone aus nachhaltig aufgeforstetem Holz schnitzen lassen würde: Insgesamt ist dieses System sehr unfrei und damit auch unethisch.
Und Ästhetik ist doch ziemlich zeit- und modeabhängig. Mal werden kantige Formen als schön empfunden, mal runde. Für den Einen muss das Mobiltelefon zum Style seines Outfits passen, für den Anderen gilt: form follows function.
