Einen Blogpost[0] vom Jeremy Allison (SAMBA) fand ich in der Hinsicht sehr interessant: "Proprietary environments are a trap"

Diese Behauptung hat mehrere Schwachpunkte: - Was ECMA-Standards wert sind, wissen wir seit der Verabschiedung von "Standard" ECMA-376 alias Office Open XML. - C# ist praktisch wertlos ohne ein Framework, welches nunmal von Microsoft definiert wird. Projekte wie Mono oder DotGNU hängen zwangsläufig Größenordnungen bei der Implementierung hinterher.

Ich bin höchst erfreut, dass Ubuntu nun auch in die Mainstream-Medien Einzug findet! :-)

Da ich nun drauf und dran bin endlich meinen zweiten Versuch zu starten, bin ich sehr gespannt, wie es ausgeht. Mein Problem ist das der Zeit, Zeit, Zeit - die ich nicht habe, um irgendwie rumzufummeln. Als Zwischenschritt hatte ich mir ja ein MacBook Pro mit OS X Tiger gekauft, welches ich allerdings von der Bildschirmauflösung nur suboptimal finde. Da fällt das weiterziehen zu GNULinux gleich leichter.
Aktuell verscherble ich wieder das MacBook Pro (was irgendwie auch recht zart und flutschig daher kommt ;) und werde mir zwei günstigere HP Notebooks kaufen, um dann parallel (wie es auch der Autor in dem Artikel empfiehlt) einen funktionierenden Win Rechner zu haben, der mir die Freiheit gibt, in kleinen Stückchen (K)Ubuntu auf dem anderen einzurichten. Sollte ich dann irgendwann den Sprung geschafft haben, mit allem was ich an Programmen und Wissen brauche (das ist leider einiges *seufz*), verscherble ich wieder die zwei HPs und hole mir ein robustes ThinkPad (vielleicht dann mit vorinstallierten Ubuntu?). *lach*
Bis dahin werden hoffentlich auch die Displays bei den ThinkPads noch besser werden. Die Anstrengungen von Lenovo für umweltfreundliche Notebooks erfreuen mich auch.
Sollte ich eigentlich Ubuntu nehmen oder Kubuntu? Das eine ist Gnome und das andere KDE?
Soweit zu meinen persönlichen System Anstrengungen, die leider aus Zeitgründen sehr langwierig sind :(

Auf meinem Powerbook läuft GNU/Linux ganz wunderbar, aber das Einrichten ist da natürlich am Anfang nicht ganz trivial. Eventuell halte nach einer lokalen GNU/Linux Gruppe ausschau, dort wird auch mal beim Installieren geholfen.

Ein Dual-Boot-System ist häufig auch ganz praktisch. Oft probieren die Leute erst eine Variante aus, welche live von einer CD läuft, also ohne Installation.
Richtig komfortabel ist auch die Verwendung von virtuellen Maschinen, wie VirtualBox, dann kannst Du Windows und GNU/Linux gleichzeitig laufen lassen.

Das ist der Unterschied, ja. In Deutschland ist KDE recht weit verbreitet, international eher Gnome. Ansonsten ist es Geschmackssache.

Ja, das habe ich in meiner Uni auch schon beobachtet. Auch wenn das in meinem Fachbereich eher sowas wie Microsoft Office und Photoshop Kurse sind. Ich habe jetzt mal nachgefragt, ob es auch Freie Software Kurse gibt. Mal schauen, was sich da ergibt.
Vielleicht haben wir ja auh beim nächsten Fellowship-Treffen eine Idee, wie wir Studenten besser Freie Software erklären können.
