Hallo zusammen,
mich interessiert, was es für Möglichkeiten gibt, sich mit freier Software selbstständig zu machen.
ich hoffe die Antwort auf die Frage ist nicht zu offensichtlich. Wenn das Thema an anderer Stelle schon ausführlich besprochen wurde, würde mir auch ein Link reichen. Bisher konnte ich im Internet keine zufriedenstellenden Informationen finden.
Etwas zu mir und meiner Situation:
Ich bin seit circa drei Monaten Softwareentwickler im Bereich Embedded Systems. Der Job macht eigentlich Spaß, aber ich fühle mich unwohl dabei, proprietäre Software zu schreiben. Mir missfällt vor allem der Aspekt, dass unfreie Software aktiv den Zugriff auf die Software und den Quelltext verhindert, nur damit eine Firma gegenüber der Konkurrenz besser dasteht. Mittlerweile ist freie Software so erfolgreich, dass es doch Geschäftsmodelle geben sollte, die auch funktionieren, wenn man den Quelltext jedem frei zur Verfügung stellt, sobald er einmal geschrieben wurde.
Hinzu kommt, dass ich mich von meiner Arbeitsstelle eingeengt fühle. Ich es gefällt mir (noch) nicht, meinen Wohnsitz für die nächsten 10 Jahre festzulegen (schon gar nicht hier in der Gegend, wo der Sommer gefühlte 4 Wochen dauert) und es gefällt mir nicht, dass andere entscheiden, unter welchen Bedingungen ich an welchen Projekten arbeite und wie viel Zeit ich dafür aufwende. Deshalb die Idee, mich früher oder später selbstständig zu machen.
Geld spielt hingegen in meinem Leben eine eher geringe Rolle. Ich verdiene im Moment viel mehr als ich ausgeben kann und wenn ich diesen Job eine Weile gemacht habe, habe ich ein gewisses Polster zur Seite gelegt und kann von da an auch mit weniger Geld auskommen. Meine Ziele im Leben sind entsprechend auch weniger ein großes Haus und ein schönes Auto, sondern etwas zu machen, das ich zu 100% vertreten kann.
Damit die Email nicht zu lang wird, höre ich an dieser Stelle auf. ;-) Über Ideen und Anregungen oder eigene Erfahrungen wäre ich sehr dankbar.

wahrscheinlich bin ich ziemlich inkompetent, diese Frage zu beantworten. Ich bin bezüglich IT Laie, der aber Linux seit mindestens 15 Jahren inzwischen ausschließlich nutzt und auch mal an kleine Programmieraufgaben rangegangen ist.
In einem Gespräch mit einer Kollegin ging mir gestern Folgendes auf: Die Anwender haben viel zu viel Respekt vor dieser geheimnisvollen Software. Sie übertragen dann alles auf die Fachleute und lassen sich da Zeug aufschwatzen. Zum Beispiel: Man könne Daten nicht sicher verwahren, die übers Internet laufen. Man brauche spezielle Software, um Klientendaten zu archivieren.
Ich hatte schon früh keine solche Angst. Die Linux-Community hatte mich ermutigt, weil ich da Unterstützung vorfand, die ich sonst in der Gesellschaft nur im nahen Kreis kannte. Ich habe Klientendaten einfach in einer SQL-fähigen Datenbank (postgres) gespeichert. Sogar die Kommandozeile war da zunächst ausreichend. Die Notwendigkeit zu einem VPN hatte ich zwar nie. Aber ich würde sie einem Verbund von Stellen über Entfernungen hinweg empfehlen.
Und jetzt komme ich zu deiner Frage: Natürlich brauchen auch kleine Firmen und Dienste auch einen Fachmann/frau im Hintergrund. Aber er könnte ausdrücklich dafür werben, dass er den PC-Arbeitsplatz sehr durchsichtig für die Anwender gestaltet. Und dafür eignet sich m.E. nur Linux. Weil er seinen Durchblick in mögliche Gefahren besser vertreten kann als einer mit einem anderen Betriebssystem, könnte er den Anwendern einen deutlich anderen Mut vermitteln, selbst durchzublicken und vor diesem Hintergrund auch Dinge zu wagen, vor denen andere zurückschrecken. So würden sie den PC flexibler in ihren Arbeitsalltag integrieren als Anwender, die Angst vor ihm haben.

Hallo, ich stehe vor einem ähnlichen Problem, denn bald werde ich mit meiner Masterarbeit fertig. Teil meiner Masterarbeit ist die Entwicklungs eines Programms welches ich unter der GPL veröffentlichen werden. Ich musste Jahre vorher auch schon einmal ein unfreies Programm von etwa 100 Zeilen Code schreiben obwohl mir zugesichert wurde dass ich meinen eigenen Code unter der GPL veröffenlichen darf.

Das Thema kommt immer mal wieder auf, gerade weil es keine so kurzen antworten gibt.
Als selbstständiger Softwareentwickler kann ich aus Erfahrung sagen, dass viele Kunden, die Spezialsoftware für ihre Hauseigene Umgebung in Auftrag geben, oft gar nicht über die Lizenz nachdenken. Das führt zum einen dazu, dass sie von kleinen proprietären Softwareklitschen schon mal ganz schön über den Tisch gezogen werden, zum anderen ist das aber auch eine gute Gelegenheit für Freie Software - die Vorteile eines offenen Entwicklungsmodells lassen sich nämlich plötzlich erstaunlich gut vermitteln, wenn eine Firma tatsächlich vor der Realität steht, mehrere tausend Euro für die Anfertigung von Spezialsoftware auszugeben.
Dem Kunden zu vermitteln, dass er nicht in alle Ewigkeit an dich gebunden sein wird wenn er seine Software weiterentwickeln lassen will, ist ein Aspekt darunter. Das gibt dir im Gegenzug die die Möglichkeit, dich persönlich in eine andere Fachrichtung zu entwickeln und nicht einziger Ansprechpartner für die Firma zu bleiben.
Auch kannst du z.T. den Entwicklungsprozess beschleunigen, wenn du auf vorhandene Komponenten zugreifen darfst die unter einer starken FLOSS-Lizenz (z.B. GPL/AGPL) stehen. Das macht einen echten Unterschied bei Entwicklungszeit und Geldbeutel.
Unmengen an Software die hausintern beauftragt wird ist ohnehin gar nicht dazu gedacht, jemals verkauft zu werden. Die Aussicht, dass externen Stellen möglicherweise Code beisteuern könnten oder man sich die Entwicklungskosten mit einem befreundeten Unternehmen teilen kann ist plötzlich ein großer Anreiz.
Vorurteile gegenüber freien Entwicklungsmodellen verschwinden schlagartig, sobald ein Kunde erst aus eigenem Antrieb einen Zugang dazu hat was Softwareentwicklung bedeutet.

Eine eigene Hardwareplattform zu entwickeln und im Massenmarkt zu Vertreiben wäre zum Beispiel etwas, dass ich mir bei einem Einzelunternehmer *_nicht_* gut vorstellen kann - zumindest nicht am Anfang.
Stattdessen, könntest du dich z.B auf populäre FLOSS-Freundliche Hardwareplattformen wie Arduino und RasPi konzentrieren (Plattform und Eignung kannst du selbst besser wählen) und damit Dienstleistungen zu Haus- und Geländeautomatisierung, Sensornetzen, Anlagensteuerung, Bühnenbau / Veranstaltungstechnik etc. anbieten. Gegebenenfalls ist es eine gute Idee, nicht mit fertigen Konzepten beim Auftraggeber einzufallen, sondern Material und Ausrüstung direkt vom Kunden einkaufen zu lassen, und als Dienstleister lebendig zu machen. Das vermindert das benötigte Startkapital für dich, erlaubt dir bei der Entwicklung besser auf den Kunden einzugehen, und erhöht auch die Nachsicht beim Kunden, wenn irgendwo im Projekt Probleme auftreten - schließlich sieht dieser, dass Arbeit verrichtet wird, und hat durch seine Eigenbeteiligung gegebenenfalls auch Zugang zu den technischen Hürden, die überwunden werden müssen.
Auch hier kommst du schnell in ein Feld, in dem Auftraggeber keine Angst davor haben ihre Entwicklung öffentlich zu machen. Um ein fiktives Beispiel zu nennen: Ein Konzertveranstalter, der seine Nebel- Licht- und Lautsprecheranlage für den Einsatz in einer Bühnenshow programmieren will steht nicht in Konkurrenz zu einem Bauunternehmen, das Lüftung, Jalousien und Fahrstuhlmusik in einem Bürogebäude Tageszeit- und Wetterabhängig regulieren möchte. Beide können im Gegenteil gut zusammenarbeiten. Der Vorteil gegenüber der Konkurrenz liegt bei solchen Firmen ohnehin mehr in der Fachlichen Spezialisierung auf ein Feld, als in der Verfügbarkeit von irgendwelchen bestimmten Gadgets.

Das sind denke ich ziemlich gute Voraussetzungen für dein Unterfangen.
Wichtig für kleine Unternehmer ist, dass du dir einen Kundenstamm aufbaust indem du mit anderen Unternehmern ins Gespräch kommst. Nur zum Teil geht das auf Fachmessen. Gerade wenn diese viel Eintritt kosten sind sie aber eher mal ein Teich für größere Fische. Lokale Unternehmerstammtische, User Groups, Gemeinschaftswerkstätten oder auch einfach nur eine Imbissbude im Industrieviertel sind geeignet um mit Kunden und Geschäftspartnern ins Gespräch zu kommen. Achja Geschäftspartner: Es gibt keine Konkurrenten, es gibt nur Kollegen. Gerade in so einem ideologisch geprägten Umfeld wie bei Freier Software spielt man sich gern mal gegenseitig Aufträge zu, holt sich ein zweites Paar Augen mit ins Projekt oder sucht einfach einen Troubleshooter wenn man selbst gerade im Urlaub ist. Also sprich mit Leuten - vom Floristen, der eine Gießanlage braucht über das Esotherikercafé mit automatischem Gong und den spleenigen Küchenausstatter mit origineller Kaffeemaschine im Kundenraum bis zum Industrieanlagenbauer.
Was ich hier sage, sage ich natürlich alles aus persönlicher Erfahrung. Manch einer mag mir in dem ein oder anderen Punkt widersprechen oder etwas hinzufügen. Freie Software zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass man auf bestehendes zurückgreifen kann und folglich nur das hinzufügt was noch nicht da ist. Eben weil in dem Feld ständig neues entsteht, arbeitet auch jeder Entwickler in einem anderen Umfeld, es gibt also keine Standard-Geschäftsmodelle.

Ich kenne zwei große Geschäftsmodelle, die direkt mit freier Software zu tun haben. Beide begründen sich darauf, etwas zu machen was (so) nur deinem Auftraggeber direkten Nutzen bringt und für jeden anderen nicht.
Die klassischen Geschäftsmodelle auf Basis freier Software sind:

Auch kleine Unternehmen brauchen eine stabile, lauffähige Softwareumgebung. Ob das freie oder proprietäre Software ist, spielt für das Unternehmen zunächst einmal eine untergeordnete Rolle. Wenn du gut genug bist, ein Unternehmen zu seiner Zufriedenheit mit (zumindest überwiegend) freier Software auszustatten und dann noch die Vorteile von freier Software (und freien Dateiformaten) kennst und gut kommunizieren kannst, dann hast du einen echten Wettbewerbsvorteil. Und Support-Tätigkeiten sind prinzipiell schwer 1:1 auf andere Firmen übertragbar, so dass hier der Auftraggeber wohl auch wenig Probleme damit hat, wenn du in dem Zuge erstellte Konfigurationen oder ähnliches dann öffentlich machst.
Dann eben den Bereich in dem eine Software erstellt wird, die von den Rahmenbedingungen her niemand anderem als deinem Auftraggeber nützt weil z.B. eine Spezialmaschine gesteuert wird, ein spezieller Arbeitsablauf im Unternehmen automatisiert wird oder die Software alleine der Komplexität wegen schlichtweg ohne Support des Autors nicht zu verstehen ist. Solche Software kann man oft auf Basis freier Komponenten schneller erstellen und eine freie Veröffentlichung ist für den Auftraggeber kein Nachteil. Oft wird dann noch ein Werkvertrag gemacht, der dir verbietet eine gleichartige Software auch noch einem Mitbewerber anzubieten oder aktiv an der Implementierung beim Mitbewerber zu helfen, so dass der Mitbewerber nie in den Genuss des Supports durch den Autor kommt. Dennoch hast du freie Software produziert, die andere nutzen können. Und du kannst bei diesem Vorgehen auch auf allerlei vorhandene freie Software zurückgreifen.
Das sind die klassischen Fälle in denen dem Auftraggeber die Lizenz der Ergebnisse egal ist und daher nichts dagegen spricht, alles mit freier Software zu machen.
Ich selbstständig mit einer kleinen Webhosting-Firma. Wir setzen bei uns nur freie Software ein und haben einige selbsterstellte Sachen veröffentlicht, wobei bei uns der oben genannte Fall eintritt: Das ist alles so speziell, dass es niemand anders unverändert einsetzen kann. Jeder ist aber schon durch die Lizenz eingeladen, die Codes anzuschauen und daraus Sachen für sich abzuleiten.

Ist halt nur ein möglicher Weg für eine komplett neue Software ohne harte GPL-Dependancies und nur erfolgversprechend wenn die Software von mehreren Kunden eingesetzt werden kann. Also in der Tendenz nichts was man einem einzelnen Programmierer empfehlen sollte.

Ich ernähre meine Familie seit 12 Jahren mit freier Software. Ich habe 20 bis 30 Kunden, denen ich meinen Support verkaufe in Form von Jahresbeiträgen. Meine Kunden sind kleine Unternehmen, denen ich maßgeschneiderte Datenbank-Anwendungen schreibe. Ich sitze "da, wo Access zu eng wird und SAP noch zu teuer ist" (bzw. natürlich wo beide nicht in Frage kommen weil sie unfrei sind).

Das ist jetzt nicht gerade Embedded Systems, aber wenn es dich interessiert, dann erzähle ich dir gerne mehr darüber. Ich suche nämlich Leute, die mit mir dran glauben.
