man hört ja immer wieder von Geiselungen der DruckernutzerInnen durch Chips, die Verbrauchsmaterialen von Dritt-Herstellern unterbinden. Bei meinem Brother-Drucker fand ich irgendwann heraus, verweigert ein Sensor den Dienst, wenn der annimmt das der Toner alle ist - den musste ich manuell überlisten um dann viele Seiten weiter zu drucken. Bei einem Epson neulich konnte man nicht schwarz-weiss drucken, weil eine Farbpatrone leer war (die Drucker-Firmware hat den Dienst verweigert).
Weiss jemand ob es eine Übersicht gibt welche Drucker (-Hersteller) die Freiheiten ihrer Nutzer berücksichtigen, oder hat gute Erfahrungen gemacht?

Ein ähnliches Problem habe ich mit dem Canon Pixma IP4950.

Die alternative schwarze Patrone wird zwar erkannt, aber ein Drucken ist nicht möglich.
Nur im Duplexmodus mit der verbliebenden Restfarbe, da der Drucker auch im Graustufenmodus Farbe verwendet.

Bei den Modellen mit "Fotoschwarz" wird bei Duplex per default die teurere Fotopatrone verwendet (angeblich weil sie schneller trocknet). Ausschaltbar ist es leider nicht :(

Meines Wissens gibt es da leider niemanden. Drucker sollen möglichst billig sein, da will der Hersteller sich sein Geschäftsmodell mit möglichst schwierig nachzubauenden Patronen (Patente) absichern. Mir ist z.B. auch kein Drucker bekannt, bei dem ich die Firmware frei verändern dürfte. Meine Nachbarin hat einen Drucker gekauft, dessen Tintenpatronen einfach nachgefüllt werden können. Das Ding hat über 100 Euro gekostet. Leider wird ein unfreier Treiber benötigt, obwohl das Gerät Apple Airprint (Driverless PDF unterstützt). Für maximale Freiheit empfehle ich https://www.thinkpenguin.com/catalog/printer-all-one-gnulinux. Leider hat Thinkpenguin noch keinen europäischen Reseller.

Stimmt, das sollte man noch erwähnen: Die ganzen HP-Multifunktionsgeräte bzw. -drucker funktionieren bis auf ganz wenige Ausnahmen "out of the box" mit Freier Software. http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/about.html
Das ist schon mal extrem lobenswert! Ich hatte mir vor einiger Zeit (der alte HP war kaputt) ein Canon-Gerät gekauft und getestet. Da Canon einen festen Druckkopf benutzt konnte ich das Ding nicht mehr zurückgeben. Jetzt muss ich bei jedem PC wieder fummeln, bis das Ding endlich läuft. :(

Ja, HP engagiert sich sehr im Linux-Umfeld und hat mit HPLIP eine Treiber-Suite die fast alle Modelle von HP abdeckt und die freie Software ist.
Aber, ich finde das dennoch nicht erstrebenswert. Grade bei Druckern gibt es standardisierte Druckersprachen. Es gibt PostScript und es gibt PCL. Vernünftige PPD-Dateien reichen aus um einen entsprechenden Drucker voll funktionsfähig zu machen. Und zwar nicht nur unter Linux sondern unter jedem obskuren BSD oder sowas.
Denn das ist der große Kritikpunkt, den ich an der Vorgehensweise von HP habe (das ja ähnlich zu NVidia ist, nur dass HP freie Treiber macht und NVidia propritäre): Es gibt nur Treiber für die Modelle die HPLIP unterstützt und nur unter den Betriebssystemen die HPLIP unterstützt. Ich hatte mal einen recht neuen HP-Drucker, da musste ich HPLIP aus den Sourcen bauen weil die Version meiner Distribution zu alt war und den Drucker noch nicht unterstützt hat. Das passiert bei Postscript-Druckern nicht, die funktionieren auch auf einem 10 Jahre alten System genau gleich, wenn man die aktuelle PPD-Datei einspielt.
D.h. für den einzelnen Endanwender, der in diesem Fall eben Linux einsetzt und HPLIP auf der jeweils neuesten Version installieren kann, ist HPLIP eine gute Sache. Aber ideologisch finde ich das Prinzip keine herausragende Empfehlung wert. Es ist schließlich nur ein Treiber für eine proprietäre Druckeransteuerung, der gar nicht nötig wäre wenn die Drucker eine normale Druckersprache sprechen würden.
Da kauf ich lieber Drucker die Postscript unterstützen.

Ich habe auch so ein HP-Multifunktionsgerät (Officejet Pro L7590). Nunja Scans z.B. bekomme ich über das Web-Frontend als jpg..
Was mich an den Druckern am meisten stört, ist die unfreie Firmware, die z.B. über abgelaufene, aber funktionsfähige Patronen meckert etc..
So ein Drucker ist ja heutzutage eigentlich ein Computer mit speziellen Schnittstellen. Und eigentlich will ich auf _meinen_ Computern Freie Software.

Ich kenne nichts (was am Markt gängig wäre).
Aber: Ich habe selbst ein Kyocera-Multifunktionsgerät mit Netzwerkanschluss, bei dem man (soweit ich weiß) unter Linux gar nicht via SANE an den Scanner kommt, zumindest nicht über Netzwerk. Das Gerät speichert aber Scans wahlweise als PDF oder JPG auf einer Netzwerkfreigabe bzw. FTP. Zumindest bei uns ist die Hauptaufgabe aber ein- oder mehrseitige A4-Seiten als PDF einzuscannen und das bedarf keiner Nachbearbeitung außer dem Verschieben in den richtigen Ordner.
Es ist meiner Meinung nach nicht umständlicher als die klassische Methode sondern einfacher, weil man nicht erst eine Vorschau einlesen und dann zurechtschneiden und abspeichern muss sondern einfach zum Scannen an den Kopierer geht und nachher am Rechner die Dateien aufräumt.
Wir hatten Anfangs ein bisschen Angst weil "der Scanner tut nicht unter Linux". In der Praxis ist das jedoch niemals zum Problem geworden und hat dazu geführt dass der alte, klassische SANe-kompatible Flachbettscanner seit 3 Jahren keine Seite mehr eingescannt hat.
Fazit: Beim Scannen ist meiner Meinung nach "autonomes Speichern im Netzwerk" das Äquivalent zum Postscript/PPD des Druckens.

ok, ich selbst scanne eigentlich nicht viel, wenn nur A4 Dokumente. Unser Canon-Kopierer verschickt die einfach brav per Email, ist vermutlich das simpelste. Und auch "sicherer" damit nicht jeder die Scans der anderen sieht.
Das ganze per Rechner zu konfigurieren wäre aber manchmal nett, zB mache Scan-preset zum ablegen auf Freigabe XY mit dem User.

fullack, auch machen HP Drucker mit PCL/PS Treiber weniger Probleme bzw zeigen ein einheitlicheres Verhalten zu anderen Druckern. Ich hatte aktuell das Problem das hplib sehr häufig beim Druckauftrag initialisieren Fehler geworfen hat und cups das falsch interpretiert hat und den Drucker komplett pausierte. Nicht schön wenn ein Druckauftrag ein Dutzend Leute am Drucken hindert.
Wenn jeder Hersteller hier seine eigenen libs anbietet und sich alle Drucker im Verhalten stark unterscheiden können macht es die Sache nicht viel einfacher.
Weiß jemand ob hplib auch auf arm einfach zum laufen zu kriegen ist? So ein printserver am raspberry pi könnte praktisch sein. :)

Da gibt es in den Druckeinstellungen einem Schalter was im Fehlerfall zu tun ist. Der steht default auf "stop printer" und sollte auf "abort job" umgestellt werden.
Wenn jeder Hersteller hier seine eigenen libs anbietet und sich alle Drucker im Verhalten stark unterscheiden können macht es die Sache nicht viel einfacher.
Weiß jemand ob hplib auch auf arm einfach zum laufen zu kriegen ist? So ein printserver am raspberry pi könnte praktisch sein. :)
laut http://packages.debian.org ist hplip für arm verfügbar.

Verständnisfrage:
Ich benutze mittlerweilen nur PostScript Drucker, aber die Einrichtung ist für mich genau so ein Gefrickel wie ohne PostScript. Auch wenn eine PPD-Datei als Text vorliegt und viel einfacher als ein Druckertreiber aufgebaut ist, wo ist für den User da der Unterschied? Ob er sich eine PPD-Datei besorgen muss oder einen binären Treiber, ist rein von der Gebrauchstauglichkeit her gesehen doch einerlei?

Dann geh ich (als normaler USER!!) in die normale, grafische Druckereinrichtung, da wo man das Modell wählen soll. Ich merke dass der in der Liste nicht drin ist und betätige den Knopf "PPD-Datei bereitstellen". Dann öffne ich in diesem Einrichtungsfenster die Datei und fertig.
Keine Konsole, kein kompilieren, kein Gefrickel.
(Außer: Bei vielen Druckern muss man die PPD-Datei zunächst aus irgend einem Mac-Treiber extrahieren weil der Hersteller sich zu fein ist, die PPD-Datei direkt zur Verfügung zu stellen.)

bei "guten" Herstellern gibt es die PPD auf der Treiberdownloadsite. Treiber im Web suchen ist nicht toll aber sind die meisten aus Windowszeiten noch gewohnt.
