Wieviel Probleme davon sind Ubuntu-spezifisch und wieviele wirklich ein Problem vom Upstream-Kernel? Wenn Ubuntu bspw. keine Firmware mehr verteilt, ist das kaum dem Linux-Kernel anzulasten.

Hallo Michael,
das ist vor allem ein Problem für Xubuntu und Lubuntu - (K)Ubuntu sollte man auf einem alten System ohnehin nicht installieren. Ich würde aus grundsätzlichen Erwägungen ein 'buntu sowieso nie empfehlen, sondern immer eine Distro, die direkt auf Debian basiert (mit RedHat-Derivaten kenne ich mich nicht aus).
Ich selbst nutze und empfehle SolydX und hatte nur einmal Probleme mit alter Hardware: IOMEGA ZIP (kennt das noch wer?) unterstützt auch der Debian-Kernel nicht mehr. In solchen Extremfällen hilft Puppy Linux (mit seinen Derivaten).

das Kommunikationsproblem ist aus meiner Sicht, dass es eben hinreichend viele Menschen gibt, die zu GNU/Linux gewechselt sind, weil sie ihre alten "Schätzchen", meist Laptops, aber auch Desktops weiterhin mit einem unterstützten Betriebssystem nutzen wollten.
Diesem Publikum wurde dann meist Xubuntu etc. empfohlen, und es wurden von Aktivisten entsprechende Installationen begleitet.
Diese "grüne" Fraktion der Nutzer Freier Software, die gar nicht so klein ist, steht, wie auch im referenzierten Artikel beschrieben wird, etwas "im Regen".
Das ist für uns noch kein "PR-GAU", aber wir sollten darauf vorbereitet sein, hier vernünftigen Rat geben zu können.
Ich persönlich würde da ein etwas "universelleres Betriebssystem" empfehlen wollen. Aber das ist meine persönliche Ansicht.

Wir arbeiten seit 2008 mit ubuntu auf Server, Workstations und Laptops / Notebooks (alles HP oder Dell, mit Intel) -> keinerlei Probleme auch bei Geräten die deutlich älter als 5 Jahre sind! Probleme gab es nur auf "Preiswerten" Geräten von Acer und Benq, die Modems von asiatischen billigst-Zulieferern verwendeten. Hier kam es zu W-Lan Ausfällen, welche aber leicht mit billigen W-Lan USB-Sticks behoben werden konnten. Mittlerweile wurden diese Geräte aber auch aus anderen Gründen aussortiert.
Ich halte das hier geschilderte "Problem" für sehr überschaubar, so lange man sich an Marken-Hardware hält! Und das sollte man eh, wenn man lange Freude haben möchte.

Ich meine, bei Festplatten, internen Ethernetkarten, USB-Speicherstiften, USB-Mäusen, USB-Tastaturen, USB-Soundkarten, USB-MIDI-Schnittstellen gibt es doch praktisch nie Probleme. Wohingegen WLAN und Scanner ein steter Quell von Problemen sind. Drucker sind so mittelschwierig. Ich habe einen Brother-Scanner-Drucker-alles-in-einem, für den Brother Linux-Treiber zur Verfügung stellt. Unter Ubuntu 18.04 funktioniert der Scanner-Treiber aber nicht mehr.

das Problem sind nicht die unfreien Treiber, sondern die Tatsache, dass der Linux-Kernel als monolithischer Kernel Designt wurde. Dabei wurde nie daran gedacht, Gerätetreiber von Dritt-Anbietern zu unterstützen. Vielmehr vertritt man die Philosophie, dass allle Gerätetreiber in den offiziellen Linux-Kernel integriert werden sollen.
Aufgrund der Möglichkeit sogenannte Kernelmodule zu entwickeln, gibt es aber die Möglichkeit Kernelmodule außerhalb des offiziellen Kernels bereitzustellen. Dies verursacht aber das Problem, dass diese Kernelmodule bei jeder neuen Kernelversion neu übersetzt werden müssen. Hierbei kann das Problem auftreten, dass aufgrund von geänderten Kernelstrukturen Anpassugen an diesen Kernelmodulen notwendig werden.
Schon vor ein paar Jahren durfte ich die Erfahrung machen, dass das Paket für den WLAN-Chipsatz von Broadcom, wie er im MacBook Pro vorkommt, bei Ubuntu schlechter gepflegt wurde, als unter Fedora. Ein Kollege in der Lug berichtete mir von Kernel Panics unter Ubuntu. Bei genaueren Nachforschungen stellte sich heraus, dass sowohl ich, als auch er die gleiche Kernelversion benutzten. Bei einer Analyse der bereitgestellten Pakete stellt sich heraus, dass bei Ubuntu ein Patch fehlte, der das eben beschriebene Problem für diese Kernelversion beheben sollte.
Zum Schluß möchte ich noch anmerken, dass die Richtlinien für die Bereitstellung von Paketen unter Fedora die Veröffentlichung von Kernelmodulen explizit untersagt. Das ist also kein Problem der gewählten Lizenz des entsprechenden Kernelmoduls, sondern der oben angerissenen Problematik von Kernelmodulen geschuldet.
