Was für Freie-Software-Lösungen kennt ihr? Und was für Erfahrungen habt ihr damit gemacht?

Hallo Matthias,
ich setze bisher Mattermost ein (https://about.mattermost.com https://about.mattermost.com/) und bin recht zufrieden damit. Steht unter der MIT und ist quelloffen - sowohl Server als auch Client. Die Quellen sind unter https://github.com/mattermost/ https://github.com/mattermost/ abrufbar.

Ich finde Mattermost ganz gut. Das gilt als Slack-Alternative, aber da ich Slack noch nie benutzt habe, kann ich das nicht kommentieren. ;-)

Bei meinem letzten Arbeitgeber wurde rocketchat verwendet, das tat soweit was es soll. Habe es aber nicht administriert. ;) https://rocket.chat/

kommt drauf an was man braucht, ich persoenlich find slack ziemlich grottig und deren desktop client braucht relativ viel resourcen.
je nachdem was man braucht: * xmpp * irc (quassel je nachdem ob man das will) * matrix tut auch ganz gut (mit E2E crypto is es ein bisserl muesamer, aber das kann slack ja eh ned.
gibt sicher noch mehr moeglichkeiten, hatte ich aber no ned in der hand, aber ich frag mich nachwievor was an slack so speziell ist das man gezielt alternativen suchen muss...ist auch in der praxis nur ein text chat (mit ein bisserl formating)
muehsamer wirds mit dem alternativen suchen sobald da irgendwelche bots/externen services ins slack integriert sind weil man da dann davon abhaengig ist was jeweils unterstuetzt wird.

Ich habe dazu kürzlich einen Gast-Artikel auf kuketz-blog.de veröffentlicht: https://www.kuketz-blog.de/messenger-matrix-das-xmpp-fuer-hobby-admins/
Obgleich die Überschrift einen anderen Fokus setzt, nehme ich im Artikel ausdrücklich auch Bezug auf Slack, da Matrix mir dem Client "Riot" zumindest in weiten Teilen die Usability von Slack bietet. Von einem Projekt, bei dem wir einen Slack-Channel zu einem Matrix-Channel bridgen, weiß ich, dass die Slack-User von einigen weiteren Kollaborations-Features profitieren, die Matrix/Riot aktuell nicht bietet. Welche genau das sind, weiß ich grad nicht, aber Matrix/Riot bietet alles, was man zum kollaborativen Arbeiten benötigt (drag&drop von Dateien, Markdown-Unuterstützung, AV-Telefonie). Außerdem ist der Vergleich ziemlich unfair: Matrix hat einen einzigen hauptamtlichen Entwickler und dafür ist es schon eine Leistung, dass sich das Ergebnis nicht hinter Slack verstecken braucht.
Matrix ist demnach (für mich) die föderale, freie Alternative zu Slack, da es genügend Kollaborations-Features mitbringt (wobei es im Artikel eher darum ging, eine modernere Alternative für XMPP vorzustellen, die niedrigschwelliger zu administrieren ist - nur, um nochmal einer möglkichen Verwirrung bezüglich des Artikel-Titels vorzubeugen), und auch ein föderaler, freier Messenger für den Alltag. Weiteres verrät der Artikel.
Nachtrag: Im Gegensatz zu Rocket.chat und Mattermost gibt es den besagten Matrix-Client Riot auch über F-Droid zu beziehen: https://f-droid.org/packages/im.vector.alpha/ (was für mich ein wichtiger Grund für Matrix war)

Hallo Matthias,
bei SageMath verwenden wir seit Kurzem Zulip (https://github.com/zulip/zulip/). Scheinbar sind die meisten ganz zufrieden damit. Bei Zulip liegen die Chats automatisch in einer Hierarchie mit zwei Ebenen. Damit lassen sich imo leichter Themen ausblenden, die einen nicht interessieren bzw. man kann sich auch schneller einen Überblick verschaffen über was diskutiert wurde.

Ich weiß, es ist schon etwas her, aber das hatte ich noch vergessen zu schreiben: Zuerst sollten die Bedürfnisse der verschiedenen Teilnehmer an einen Chat ausgewertet werden:
- Kann es ein zentraler Server sein? Oder wird Integration in bestehende Netzwerke benötigt? - Wird eine funktionale WebUI benötigt? - Adressbücher, Avatare, Emojis (ganz wichtig) etc.
Denn eine Software "wie Slack" kann von irc über jabber bis hin zu riot.im (oder gar E-Mail...) im Prinzip alles sein, das ist viel zu unspezifisch, denke ich.
