Soviel ich weiß geht es dabei darum, dass verschiedene Firmen einen gemeinsamen Patent-Pool erstellen, die Patente für Freie Software frei geben und sie gegebenenfalls dazu nutzen, um sich gegen Patentklagen zu wehren.

Das sollte stimmen. Ich habe mich auch nie intensiv damit beschäftigt, OIN ist mir aber schon länger ein Begriff.
Seit es das OIN gibt scheint sich z.B. RedHat sicher genug zu fühlen um Mono in Fedora aufzunehmen, davor haben sie damit zumindest gezögert. Hier schreibt z.B. Greg DeKoenigsberg von RedHat was dazu: http://gregdek.livejournal.com/4008.html

Das wird aus meiner Sicht nicht funktionieren: Die Zukunft gehört den Patentverwesern ohne eigene Entwicklung, da ist ein Angriff mit eigenen Patent nicht möglich
Unglücklich ist auch, dass diese Vereinigung die Idee stärkt, die Patentgesetzgebungen und Verfahren wären über den "Markt" zu lösen. Sprich sie stärken die Software-Patentregime.
