Ja, aber es wird nicht weiter erklärt, was freie Software ist - sie wird weitgehend gleichgesetzt mit "kostenloser Software". Außerdem wird gleich zu Beginn behauptet, dass es für die meisten Nutzer sinnvoll sei, das Upgrade auf Windows 10 anzunehmen.
Hier muss noch viel Aufklärungsarbeit geleistet werden.

Erst wenn ein Artikel der reinen Linie entspricht, ist er akzeptabel? Ist in diesem Fall das Glas halb leer oder halb voll? Für mich deutlich mehr als halbvoll. Der Artikel knüpft zunächst an der Bewußtseinslage der Leute an, um dann in klarer, verständlicher Sprache über Linux zu informieren. Für mich wird auch deutlich ein Unterschied zwischen frei und kostenfrei gemacht, weil klar darauf hingewiesen wird, daß die Freiheit, und nicht die Kostenfreiheit, die Möglichkeit der Veränderung der Software beinhaltet.
Klar wäre es sehr gut gewesen, wenn auf die vier Freiheiten hingewiesen würde. Im Vergleich zu der Art und Weise, wie von Vertretern der Freien Software oftmals informiert wird, finde ich den Artikel sehr gut. Man muß ja froh sein, das gilt zum Teil auch für die FSFE, wenn Hochdeutsch geschrieben wird und kein Denglisch oder Englisch.
Ein treffendes Beispiel ist für mich der "Linux-Presentation-Day". Wie sollen Personen, die kein Englisch sprechen und keine Vorkenntnisse haben, denn durch diese Bezeichnung angesprochen werden? Wir verwenden deshalb in Mülheim an der Ruhr "Linux im Alltag".
Hier muss noch viel Aufklärungsarbeit geleistet werden.
In der Tat muß noch viel Aufklärungsarbeit geleistet werden; auch über die Strategien und Verfahren der Aufklärung. Hier sind sogar noch wesentliche Erfindungen zu leisten, um Verfahren wirksamer Aufklärung zu finden. Die kenne ich leider auch höchstens in Ansätzen.

Menschen mit der Überlegung, ihren älteren (oder auch neueren) Laptop mit dem offenen Betriebssystem Linux weiter betreiben zu wollen, sind beim Repair Café am 9.7. von 10.30 bis 13.30 Uhr im Medienhaus herzlich willkommen. Auch Fragen zu Freier Software (z.B. LibreOffice, Firefox etc.) werden beantwortet.
Denn es geht ja nicht nur um Linux: Jeder Linuxrechner ist darüber hinaus mit einer Menge an Freier Software ausgestattet.
Freie Software erkennt man an vier Freiheiten: Ihr Quellcode muss öffentlich verfügbar sein, es muss erlaubt sein, ihn zu ändern, die Software frei zu nutzen und sie auch zu weiter zu geben: Das macht im Kern Freie Software aus.
Insofern sind Streitpartner von Linux nicht Microsoft oder Apple, wohl aber deren Geschäftsidee, ihre Software eben NICHT offen (man spricht dann von proprietärer Software) beizufügen. Und natürlich kann bei geschlossener Software niemand prüfen, welche Daten solche Konzerne abgreifen. Vor allem: Die Nutzung muss in irgendeiner Form - mitunter auch mit Ihren Daten - bezahlt werden.
Bei Linux und Freier Software ist das keine Frage: Der Nutzer bleibt Herr seiner Daten, es sei denn, er will sie aus ihm bekannten Gründen weiter geben. Die Nutzung der Software ist überdies bei jedem Linux und Freier Software frei.

Hier hilft nur der stete Tropfen, die immer wieder geduldige Information. Unser (Wolfgangs und mein) Erfolg hier hat ganz viel damit zu tun, dass wir wenig in Techniksparche sprechen und wenig missionarisch sind, wohl aber aufklärend arbeiten.

Hier wird zwei mal das Kostenlos-Argument genannt - was jedoch beim später erwähnten "Red Hat Enterprise" schon mal nicht zutreffend ist.
Der Begriff "geheime Herstellerfunktionen" ist für den Laien alleine stehend m. E. unverständlich. Dieser Halbsatz wäre noch stark erklärungsbedürftig gewesen - z. B. mit dem Hinweis, dass eben durch die diese verdeckten Funktionen die Hersteller den Nutzer kontrollieren können.

Das wird für mich aus dem Artikel so nicht klar. Der Hinweis, dass das System "von vielen Programmierern weltweit seitdem weiterentwickelt" wird trifft auf so ziemlich jede aktuelle Software zu, auch auf proprietäre.
Dass dies bedeutet, dass JEDER etwas an der Software verändern und diese dann weiter verteilen kann geht daraus eben nicht hervor.
Insgesamt habe ich eher den Eindruck, dass GNU/Linux hier etwas wie sauer Bier angeboten wird, als Billig-Betriebssystem, das zwar sicher und kostenfrei ist, aber eben nicht so gut ist ("nicht ganz so gut bedienbar") und nicht viel kann ("Photoshop und Co. gibt es unter Linux nicht") wie dass "sinnvolle" Windows.

Unabhängig von der konkreten verwendeten Software und/oder deren Lizenz ist aktuelle und supportete Software immer besser als alte, nicht mehr unterstützte Versionen einzusetzen.

In der Welt in der ich lebe, ist die allgegenwärtige Kauf- und Freeware für Windows der Wechsel-Verhinterungsgrund Nr. 1, parallel zu den vorhandenen Dokumenten, die halt mit Microsoft-Proprietär-Dateiformaten gespeichert wurden.
Wer dem interessierten User diese beiden Punkte schon in der Anfangsphase bewusst schönredet, der lügt und schadet letztlich dem Image freier Software.
Sei doch froh, dass der Leser hier nachher möglicherweise das Gefühl hat, die Nachteile sind ja vernachlässigbar. So soll es doch auch sein.

Ist es so, dass die reine Reservierung reicht? M. E. muss das Update auch installiert und aktiviert werden. Der zugehörige Lizenzschlüssel, der in Abhängigkeit von der verwendeten Hardware generiert wird, wird dann auf den Microsoft-Servern gespeichert - der Nutzer bekommt diesen gar nicht mehr zu sehen. Die Lizenz ist dann mit der Hardware fest verdongelt. Ein Austausch der Hardware bedeutet, man muss eine neue Lizenz erwerben.

In der Welt in der ich lebe, ist die allgegenwärtige Kauf- und Freeware für Windows der Wechsel-Verhinterungsgrund Nr. 1, parallel zu den vorhandenen Dokumenten, die halt mit Microsoft-Proprietär-Dateiformaten gespeichert wurden.
Der Grund, der mir zumeist genannt wird ist der, dass die Leute nicht wieder von Null anfangen wollen. Sie leben seit 10 - 20 Jahren mit Windows und haben keine Lust alles von Grund auf neu zu lernen.
Nicht vorhandene Software ist da eher von untergeordneter Bedeutung, denn bis auf Spezialsoftware gibt es für Linux fast alles. Der Grund ist also nicht _keine_ Software, sondern _andere_ Software und der damit verbundene Lernaufwand. Dies kann man den Leuten aber nicht abnehmen, und so schlimm ist es nun auch wieder nicht.
Mein 71-jähriger Vater ist vor 5 Jahren, ohne dass ich irgendwas damit zu tun gehabt hätte, selbständig und autodidaktisch von Windows XP auf Linux Mint umgestiegen. Das hat mich damals selbst überrascht und mir gezeigt, wenn man möchte, dann geht es.

Ob ich damit aber mehr Leute auf GNU/Linux hätte aufmerksam machen können, ist fraglich. Fraglich ist auch, ob er überhaupt veröffentlicht worden wäre. Das redaktionelle Umfeld ist hier noch gar nicht thematisiert worden. Bei mir überwog aber der Eindruck: das ist ja ungewöhnlich, wie positiv und durchaus sachkundig da über Linux berichtet wird. Interessant wäre es, wenn man die Reaktion von normalen Windows-Nutzern erfragen könnte.

Das bestreitet wohl niemand. Daher gibt es ja auch weiterhin die FSFE. Niemand will diese wegen Zweckerreichung auflösen ;-) .
Aber: Natürlich hätten Du und ich einen solchen Artikel ganz anders geschrieben.
Wir sollten aber doch sehr froh sein, dass ein Massenblatt das Thema aufgreift und einen Artikel schreibt. der insgesamt einen positiven Tenor hat. Wir sollten uns mehr über das Positive freuen, als die Macken aufzählen.
Und an der noch notwendigen Aufklärung können wir alle weiter arbeiten. Wolfgang und Wolf-Dieter tun dies beispielsweise im Verbreitungsgebiet der WAZ.
