Ich denke nicht, dass man den Verzicht auf unfreie Software heutzutage noch als "praxisfern" titulieren kann.
Ehrlich gesagt hab ich den Eindruck, dass das Gegenteil der Fall sein kann: Es wird in manchen Bereichen _schwieriger_ rein freie Systeme aufrechtzuhalten, zum Beispiel für Administratoren von Computer-pools. Streams und Einbettungen von unfreien Audio- und Videoformaten auf Webseiten nehmen zu, die Anzahl der Seiten, die sich nur noch mit Flash richtig bedienen läßt steigt kontinuierlich an. "Ottonormalnutzer" sieht es ohnehin schon als Zumutung an, einen Linux-pool nutzen zu müssen, wenn dann auch noch die Hälfte der Sachen nicht funktioniert ist Ärger vorprogrammiert.
Ich habe manchmal das Gefühl, dass sowas wie das Vorantreiben von Gnash von vielen in der FOSS Gemeinschaft als unnötig Spielerei von niedriger Prioriät aufgefasst wird und sie ihre Zeit und Energie lieber woanders einsetzen. Und im Grunde genommen ist es das ja auch, aber meiner Erfahrung nach sind es genau diese Kleinigkeiten, die Normalnutzer daran hindern auf GNU/Linux umzusteigen, bzw. zwingen unfreie Software zu benutzen. Von daher finde ich den Debian Ansatz richtig unfreie Pakete mitentsprechendem Hinweis anzubieten.

P.S. Kleine Randnotiz: Der vrms gibt mir beste Noten, obwohl ich eine ganze Reihe von unfreien Paketen installiert habe (ich weiß, ein Sturm der Entrüstung wird sich jetzt über meinem Kopf entladen). Offensichtlich ignoriert er die Sachen, die von Debian Multimedia kommen. Vielleicht wird der arme Miniatur-RMS in meinem Rechner auch einfach nur ohnmächtig angesichts der Software und sieht sie deshalb nicht ;-)

Ich mag gnash ... ... und ich denke, dass allen denen freie Software am Herzen liegt, es ähnlich sehen. In Foren und auf Mailinglisten schreiben aber selten die Leute "Oh, wisst ihr was? Ich mag diese und jene freie Software." stattdessen kommt "Foobar stinkt, da Bla nicht richtig damit funktioniert".
Und im Grunde genommen ist es das ja auch,
Hey, ich habe selber mal an so einem ungeliebten Kind mitprogrammiert: GNU Classpath - die freie Java-Implementierung des GNU Projektes. Und was haben wir heute? Das 'richtige' Java ist freie Software und zwar unter der gleichen Lizenz wie Classpath. Ist doch super!
