Knoppix ist eine schöne GNU/Linux LIVE CD und wahrscheinlich bekannt.
Leider sind in den original Versionen von Klaus Knopper noch proprietäre Software-Pakete enthalten. Hier bei Intevation haben wir die proprietäre Software runter geworfen, damit wir für uns eine Grundlage für Projekte haben, welche vollständig mit Freier Software arbeiten.
Das Ergebniss heisst bei uns intern "Freie Software Knoppix". Für interessierte Entwickler habe ich die Dokumentation welche eine Anleitung (in Englisch) enthält erstmal (bis auf weiteres) bei mir im Arbeitsverzeichnis abgelegt: ftp.intevation.de /users/bernhard/free_software_knoppix/ free_software_knoppix_doc-20021204.tar.bz2 (650Mb, weil die Bilder dabei sind.)
Unsere Bandbreite reicht nicht für öffentliche ISO images. Über Platz wo anders würden wir uns natürlich freuen.

Ja, wir haben natürlich auch einen Fehler in der obigen Version der und in den Bilder entdeckt. :/
Grundsätzlich funktioniert sie, nur die verkürzte Sortierung für das Image geht nicht, deshalb werden resultierende Images langsam ablaufen, bzw. booten. Innerhalb der nächsten Woche gibt es eine neue Version der Anleitung.

Ich halte es taktisch für weitaus besser die positiven Aspekte einer vollkommen mit Freier Software daherkommenden Knoppix zu propagieren. Nach dem Motto, "Was soll proprietäre Software, wenn es doch mit Freier Software geht." Durch den Beweis, dass es auch vollkommen mit Freier Software geht werden die Argumente pro prorietärer Software am besten ad absurdum geführt. Tschüss, Thomas

Das reicht leider nicht ganz. Klaus (Knopper) begündet die proprietäre Software acroread auf seiner CD damit, dass es anders nicht ginge. Speziell die pdf Formulare können xpdf und gv noch nicht ausfüllen. Also geht das nur mit proprietärer Software.
Wenn wir das Argument schlucken, dass können die proprietären Softwareunternehmen mit uns machen, was wir wollen. Bevor Du sagen kannst: Geht doch auch mit Freier Software, müsstest Du xpdf erweitern. Dass erfindet Adobe was Neues. Andere machen das Format schon so schwer, dass der Vorsprung ein paar Jahre hält.
Diesen Teufelskreis kann mensch nur durchbrechen, wenn gleich die Gefahr des proprietären Datenformats erkannt wird. Um unsere Freiheit zu wahren, müssen wir auf proprietäre Software verzichten so weit es irgendwie geht.
Nur auf Grund von technischen Möglichkeiten werden viele nicht auf eine proprietäre Software mit größerer Funktionalität verzichten. Darum müssen wir auch erklären, warum sie damit ihre Freiheit weggeben.
Gibt es eigentlich Aktivitäten der FSFE in Bezug auf das Projekt "Herkules" der Bundeswehr? Wenn die ihre gesamte IT umstellen wollen, wäre es sicher sinnvoll, dort die Vorzüge Freier Software - insbesondere bei sicherheitsrelevanten Bereichen - zu betonen. Oder jedenfalls unbequeme Fragen zu stellen.

Freie Software kann nicht alle Probleme dieser Welt lösen.
Für die Bundeswehr wäre es allerdings wesentlich sinnvoller, sich einmal Gedanken um Ihre Aufgabe zu machen. Die Fähigkeit Kriege zu führen (Panzer, neue Transportflugzeuge) hat nichts mit einer Terrotialverteidigung gemein. Gut das war schon immer bei denen so, aber seit einige Jahren wird sie nun zu einer direkten Angriffsarmee umgebaut. Was an Panzern, Bomben und Minen dann auch noch "humanitär" sein soll erschliesst sich wohl nur Militärstrategen vom Schlage eines Doktor Seltsams.

Wir schauten uns z.B. neulich ein paar CA-Produkte an. Glücklicherweise können wir ansatzweise brauchbare Software nicht bezahlen (die Gesamtkosten würden sich schnell auf Beträge im Bereich der Bund-Förderung für die GnuPG-Entwicklung belaufen). Ein ganz anderer Bereich sind vollständige Backup-Lösungen.
Wie soll man für freie Software argumentieren, wenn die proprietäre objektiv besser ist, wenn nicht mit der Freiheit?

zum Thema Realisierung einer CA mit Hilfe von freier Software kann ich auf ein Projekt verweisen, dass in den letzten beiden Jahren an der FH an der ich studiere durchgefuehrt worden ist. (www.fh-landshut.de) Persoenlich war ich nicht an dem Projekt beteiligt, aber ich bin aktiver Nutzer des mittlerweilen funktionierenden Systems. Bei Interesse halte ich gerne Ruecksprache mit den Studenten, die dieses Projekt durchfuehrten und stelle auch gerne Kontakt her.
