ich hatte mich vor einigen Monaten schon mal an Bernhard Reiter und die Mailingliste gewandt, um Informationen, die mich bei einer Argumentation für den Einsatz der GPL, in einem studentischen Projekt des Fachbereichs Informatik der Universität Bremen unterstützen können, zu bekommen.
Bei dem Projekt Namens "iwear - Intelligente Kleidung" handelt es sich um ein Projekt, in dem wir hauptsächlich mit Wearable Computern der Firma Xybernaut Mobile Anwendungen entwerfen sollen. Das zwei Jährige Projekt ist im Oktober gestartet und die Ideenfindung hat begonnen.
Ich bin sehr zuversichtlich die Studenten und die Betreuer mit denen ich zusammenarbeite mit dem Argument, dass die Verwendung von bereits existierendem GPL Code uns Zeit erspart, die wir dann in unsere Forschung stecken können, überzeugen zu können.

Das Projekt ist in Kontakt mit Daimler Chrysler getreten, um Anwendungsfälle die für Daimler interessant wären zu ermitteln und auszuarbeiten. Bedauerlicherweise setzt Daimler zur Zeit Windows 2000 ein und plant eine Umstellung auf Windows XP. - Eine Tatsache die mich ein bisschen trübe stimmt. Ich kenne einen breiten Rahmen von diversen freien Tools, mit denen ein kompletter Office PC ausgerüstet werden kann, so dass die Bedienung nicht komplizierter ist als es unter proprietären Systemen der Fall wäre. Mir ist klar, dass ich wenn ich versuche Daimler die Vorteile der GPL und freier Software klar zu machen, ich gegen eine einigermassen harte Wand laufen kann. Das Risiko bin ich auch bereit einzugehen. Mich interessiert ob es schon Kontakte zu Daimler diesbezüglich gibt/gab, ich die Wand nicht mal zum zittern bringen kann oder es durchaus die Chance gibt die Wand einzurennen.
Wenn jemand Informationen hat mit denen ich argumentieren kann oder Tips hat wie ich am besten mit einem Kontakt wie Daimler umgehen kann, wäre ich sehr dankbar.

Der erste Schritt wird auch sein, die Menschen von Freier Software an sich zu überzeugen. Die GNU GPL ist ja nur eine der vielen Freie Software Lizenzen.

Ich denke, dass auch Daumer Chrysler an verschiedenen Stellen andere Betriebssysteme einsetzt. Meist ist das aber gar nicht überall bekannt, weil als offizielle Strategie etwas anders herausgegeben wird. Es ist auch anzumerken, dass es durchaus möglich ist, Freie Software auf proprietären Betriebssystem laufen zu lassen, auch wenn unschön ist, es kann ein Schritt in Richtung Freiheit sein.

Eine Chance gibt es immer. Meist hängt das an konkreten Leuten. Ein Patentrezept gibt es nicht, es hängt vom Gegenüber ab.

Ja, ich denke auch, daß Wiederverwendbarkeit, nicht nur in dem Sinn daß man selbst auf freier Software aufbauen kann, sondern auch was die zukünftige Wiederverwendbarkeit des geschriebenen Code betrifft, generell eine positive Wirkung hat. Das Rad nur deswegen immer wieder neu erfinden zu müssen weil der Quellcode nicht unter einer freien Lizenz veröffentlicht wurde, ist ja nicht gerade positiv. Die Verwendung von freier Software führt letztendlich zu einer neuen Ökonomie, die auf der der Wiederverwendbarkeit von bereits existierenden Projekten aufbaut.
Die Stadt München hat ja die stragegische Entscheidung für freie Software deswegen gefällt, weil man nicht von einem Monopolisten, der alles diktiert abhaengig sein will. Das ist auch ein Aspekt.

Allerdings, Linux scheint schon bei Daimler ziemlich breit eingesetzt zu werden, nur auf dem Desktop noch nicht. Aber ein Forschungsprojekt könnte in willkommener Pilot sein, um Freie Software auf dem Desktop zu evaluieren.

Jupp, ich habe einmal Kontakt mit einem Xybernaut-Berater gehabt, der schon 1999 oder 2000 Linux auf dem Xybernaut installiert hatte. Es waren die damals aktuellen SuSE Linux Distributionen, sie ließen sich über ein am Parallelport angeschlossenes CD-ROM problemlos auf den damaligen wearable Xybernaut installieren.
Dabei fällt mir ein, daß Geschwindigkeit auch ein Argument für F/OSS auf dem Xybernaut sein könnte daß die grafische Oberfläche bei Bedarf auch sehr speichersparend konfiguriert werden kann und so mehr Speicher für Plattencache da ist der wieder für weniger Disk-Zugriffe und eine längere Batterielaufzeit sorgen kann.
Ein weiteres Argument könnte Sicherheit sein. Sicherheit sein, z.B. liegt der letzte Security-Bug in einem Linux-Browser schon laenger zurück(kann mich an gar keinen erinnern), während Microsoft gerade wieder einen Exploit hat, der dem Angreifer kontrolle über den Client gibt:
