Soweit mir bekannt sind wir nicht auf dem G8 Gifpel. Intern haben wir das diskutiert, aber nicht genug Resources um hier effektiv tätig zu werden. Weiterhin fürchteten wir, dass es zu differenzierten Betrachtungen auf dem Gipfel nicht kommen wird, weil zu diesem Zeitpunkt alle Leute schreien. Das scheint mir auch so eingetroffen zu sein, wenn ich die Presse so verfolge. Da lag uns der GNU/Linuxtag in Berlin näher.
Nur weil die Medien ein einsitiges Bild von den Gipfelprotesten zeigen, heißt das nicht, dass dies der Wahrheit entspicht. Gerade in einer medienerfahrenen Organisation wie der FSFE hätte ich da auch eine differenziertere Betrachtung der Gipfelproteste erwartet.
Wer heute mal in die Median geschaut hat wird auch festgestellt haben, dass selbst etablierte, konservative Organisationen wie die evangelische Kirche sich Globalisierungskritik erlauben, weil sie diese für richtig und wichtig halten... warum trauen wir uns nicht?
Ich habe da letztens noch von jemand (und ihr wisst wen ich meine ;) ) gelesen, das "Free Software Movement" sei im gegensatz zur "Open-Source-Bewegung" eine soziale Bewegung, keine technische. Wie kann es da sein, dass wir zu einem politischen Großereignis wie diesem nichts zusagen haben? Und das obwohl sogar Urheberrecht und Patentrecht ganz oben auf der Agenda stehen, wir also ganz sachlich und fachlich was zum Besten geben könnten?
Naja, der Linuxtag war trotzdem nett ;)

ich kann schon verstehen, dass der Linuxtag für die FSFE einfach "näher" ist - schliesslich geht es dort ja insbesondere auch um freie Software.
Allerdings laufen wir Gefahr, wenn wir uns nur auf solche Sachen konzentrieren:
1. den gesellschaftlichen Auftrag freier Software für die Industrie- als insbesondere auch für die Entwicklungsländer zu vernachlässigen
2. immer nur die selben Menschen zu erreichen, die sich bereits mit Linux und Co. auskennen
Der alternative G8 Prozess und der evangelische Kirchentag wären wirklich hervorragende Medien gewesen, um das Ziel freier Software mehr Menschen zu verdeutlichen und bekannt zu machen. Deswegen meine eindringliche Bitte: wir müssen die Ziele der freien Software mehr in die Gesellschaft hineintragen und insbesondere auch in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit und dem globalisierungskritischen Prozess einbringen.

Ich glaube, dass sich viele Leute zwar technisch mit Freier Software auskennen sich jedoch nicht den gesellschaftlichen und politischen Aspekten bewußt sind. Von den Fragen auf dem diesjährigen Linuxtag, genauso wie auf den letzten Linuxtagen, würde ich das nicht als ein "Heimspiel" bezeichnen.
Manchmal -- so kam es mir auf jeden Fall vor -- kann es auch einfacher sein, gesellschaftlich engagierten Menschen die technischen Grundlagen für das Verständnis von Freier Software zu vermitteln -- als Leuten die sich sehr gut mit der technischen Seite auskennen, die gesellschaftlichen Aspekte zu vermitteln.

Was ist für dich der gesellschaftliche Auftrag Freier Software? Warum ist der Auftrag für dich in Entwicklungsländern wichtiger als in Industrieländern?
Für mich ist gesellschaftliche Auftrag freier Software, sicher zu stellen, das alle Menschen frei und selbstbestimmt am digitalen Leben teilhaben können, um ihre Potentiale bestmöglich zu entfalten.
Und die Grundlage dafür ist - neben der Hardware - die Software.
Ist das Wissen der Software nicht frei, schließt es Menschen aus und führt zu einer geschlossenen digitalen Gesellschaft, in der sich nur die befinden, die über genug Geld verfügen teure Zwangslizenzen zu bezahlen oder "geistige Monopole" für sich beanspruchen, ohne zuzugeben, dass sie selbst nur auf den Schultern von Giganten stehen.
Der Auftrag ist in Entwicklungsländern für mich deshalb etwas einfacher, weil dort IT/KT erst beginnt. Sie müssen nicht die gleichen Fehler machen, die wir gemacht haben. Es ist leichter neue, freie Infrastrukturen zu schaffen, als erst alte einzureißen und dann neu zu bauen.
Wenn ein Entwicklungsland früh den Wert freier Software erkennt, kann der ganze Entwicklungsprozess innerhalb der digitalen Welt oder ein Grossteil dessen auf Gemeinwohl basieren und es werden keine neuen Abhängigkeiten erzeugt.
Der Weg in den Industriestaaten ist langwieriger. Nicht weniger wichtig, aber eben schwieriger. Hier müssen erst die ganzen bestehenden digitalen Muster und Abhängigkeiten überwunden werden, was wirklich nicht leicht ist.

Verstehe nicht oder habe gerade keine Zeit zu verstehen. ;)
Wenn das E für Europa ein Hindernis ist zu wichtigen globalen Themen der Menschheit Stellung zu beziehen, so würde ich dem nicht ganz folgen können - zumal die FSF international verzweigt ist. Sehe das also überhaupt nicht als Problem Florian. :) Zumal es auch viele arme Staaten in Europa gibt.
Außerdem reden wir von freier Software und die hört garantiert nicht in Europa oder den USA auf, sondern überall dort, wo keine Hardware und Infrastruktur vorhanden ist. Ansonsten ist unser Thema absolut global.
Ich arbeite nunmal global und lebe in einer globalen Welt. Für mich ist die FSFE der verlängerte Arm zur gesamten FSF Gemeinde und nicht nur ein kleine lokale NGO. :) Und mit der FSFE bin ich, weil ich eben in diesem Stückchen Erde namens Europa lebe. Würde ich in Indien leben, so wäre es die FSF India.

Noch ein kleiner Nachtrag:
In 2 Wochen ist ja eine große Hauptversammlung.
Es wäre schön, wenn die Worte von Bernhard, dass es kein Problem ist, sich mehr mit der globalisierungskritischen Weltbewegung zu vernetzen und zu den globalen Herausforderungen der Menschheit Stellung zu beziehen, auch "offiziell abgesegnet" werden.
Ich kann es verstehen, wenn die FSFE ihr Thema hat (wie jede andere NGO auch), aber ich könnte es eben nicht verstehen, wenn sie sich in diesem Thema einzäunt und den Rest der riesigen Weltbewegung nicht wahrnimmt, nichts mit ihr zu tun haben will.
Würde mich wirklich freuen, wenn es da eine Art "Öffnung" geben würde, wie ich das die letzten Emails auf der Liste auch sehr positiv wahrgenommen habe. Denn dann kann man viel stärker den gesellschaftlichen Anspruch der FS weitertragen, als es bisher der Fall ist.
Denn wenn die FSF/E nichts mit dieser Weltbewegung und den vielen tollen NGOs in diesem Bereich zu tun haben will, wird diese Weltbewegung auch nichts mit der FSF/E zu tun haben wollen. Denn wer sich abschottet, grenzt sich letztlich selbst aus.
Ich denke es gibt hier viele Menschen, die viel mehr genau in diesem Bereich "Entwicklungszusammenarbeit und Globalisierung" im Rahmen von Freier Software wirken würden. Von der Vernetzung hin bis zur konkreten Tat. Die einzelnen Emails die mich dazu direkt erreichen, sprechen davon auch Zeugnis ;)
Es wäre schön, wenn wir dieses Potential freisetzen könnten.

die Beziehungen zu anderen Organisationen (nicht nur NROs) ist natürlich ein wiederkehrendes Thema innerhalb der FSFE. Bezüglich G8 würde das bedeuten, wir würden es am liebsten den Leuten ausserhalb und innerhalb des Zauns erklären und wir werden uns auch so benehmen, dass wir durchaus akzeptiert werden können und nicht vereinnahmt werden.
Natürlich haben wir in unseren Reihen Leute welche politisch das ein oder andere gut oder schlecht finden, nur als FSFE-Vertreter ist das nicht unsere Rolle und würde der Sache schaden. Deshalb halten wir uns da auch mit Stellungnahmen in anderen Themen zurück.

Viel zu wenig hat man sich offenbar klar gemacht, dass es eine Grundsatzentscheidung zu treffen gilt: Will man den Gipfel, das alljährliche Treffen der wichtigsten Wirtschaftsnationen samt Russland, militant bekämpfen, verhindern, blockieren - oder will man "nur" protestieren und womöglich politische Forderungen an Bush & Co. stellen. Beides zusammen schließt sich logisch aus.
Dass in unserem Staat viel faul ist und sich diese Fäulnis auch im Umgang mit den Demonstranten in Heiligendamm offenbart hat, ändert nichts daran, dass diese Demonstranten einer selbstgerechten, gewaltfördernden politischen Rhetorik gefolgt sind, die sie als eine Art pubertäre Flegel ausweist. Wir müssen gewisse gutbürgerliche Umgangsformen hochhalten. Ob unsere Situation in Richtung Weimar degeneriert oder nicht, hängt von den Ansprüchen ab, die wir an uns stellen.

Tatsächlich ist das Bild des Gipfels in den Medien differenziert gewesen und Inhalte haben sogar eine größere Rolle gespielt, als ich persönlich erwartet hätte. Einige Kommentatoren bemängelten allerdings, dass starke intellektuelle Positionen bei den Veranstaltungen gefehlt hätten. Insgesamt halte ich die Entscheidung bei begrenzter Tatkraft für wichtig, persönlich nicht hingefahren zu sein. Sprich: Hättet wir mehr Leute, hätten wir auch was gemacht.

Inhaltlich bin ich sehr für Globalisierung, zum Beispiel von Mindeslöhnen, Menscherechten, Demokratie, guten Arbeitsbedingungen, Umweltschutz ... Mir ist recht unklar, woran Du erkennst, dass wir hier nicht kritisch sind, wir sind sogar kritisch den "Globalisierungskritikern" gegenüber. ;)

Unsere Argumente brauchen Zeit sich damit zu beschäftigen, wir müssen sie multiplizieren. Angesichts des "Großereignisses" ist oft wenig Platz für diese Zeit, zudem wir nur einen kleinen Teil des Spektrums einer besseren Welt ausmachen. Ich möchte also Leute zum Denken bringen, welche dann zu diesen Ereignissen fahren können.

weil du mich angeschrieben hattest, hatte ich gerade mal geschaut, wo ich in der Email war - aber das war nur Hannes Email :)
Trotzdem ganz schnell eine Antwort (habe auch noch eine offene Email von Matze ;)

Ich glaube da muss man auch zwischen Demo und Gipfel unterscheiden. Die Demo ist nichts für die FSFE. Was den alternativen Gipfel anbelangt, so gab es schon einige gute Funken von namhaften Leuten, aber das war in der Tat zu wenig - und ging wenn dann auch unter im Medienfeuer der Gewalt.
Toll fand ich aber die Live Schaltungen zwischen G8 Rostock und ev. Kirchentag. :)
Insgesamt halte ich die Entscheidung bei begrenzter Tatkraft für wichtig, persönlich nicht hingefahren zu sein. Sprich: Hättet wir mehr Leute, hätten wir auch was gemacht.

Schön zu lesen. Dann sollte ja eine Annäherung an die globalisierungskritische Bewegung leichter fallen als gedacht. ;) Gerne werde ich mein bestes in der Zukunft versuchen, um da Übergänge hinzubekommen, auf das es zu einem fruchtbaren Austausch kommt!

Das stimmt natürlich: es ist nur ein kleines Spektrum. Und es bezieht sich vor allem auf die digitale Welt. Das heisst: davor kommen viele grundlegendere Dinge, wie Zugang zu Wasser, Kleidung, Medikamente, Abschaffung der Folter, Mitbestimmung usw.
Aber dennoch ist freie Software nach diesen wichtigsten Anliegen extrem wichtig, nämlich sobald die digitale Welt beginnt. Sobald IT/KT ein Thema wird, greift das wichtige Anliegen freier Software in allen digitalen Bereichen.
Und das müssen wir mehr kommunizieren, müssen den Menschen die sich für all die anderen Sachen engagieren, bewusst machen. Die kennen - wenn überhaupt - die FSFE nur vom Namen her. Wenn überhaupt, wie gesagt. Die meisten hatten mit der Freien Software Bewegung noch nie was am Hut.
Hier müssen wir langsam Mauern einreisen, Brücken bauen, für mehr Austausch sorgen. Das will ich gerne versuchen, wo immer ich kann. :)
