ich will keine Grundsatzdiskussion auslösen, aber da die FreieSoftware-Bewegung ja explizit _keine_ für eine bestimmte IT-Elite ist (oder sein sollte), sondern eine soziale (und damit für jeden mitdenkenden Menschen offen steht), einige Anmerkungen:

Dazu kommt noch die Frage nach der Art der Authentifizierung. Bei XMPP und einigen anderen Protokollen hast du halt separate Zugangsdaten, die flexibel nutzbar sind aber heutige Laien auch gerne mal vor unerwartete Herausforderungen stellt.
Auch hier: reine "Bildungssache". Bei Email geht auch niemand davon aus, sich mit der Telefonnummer authentifizieren zu können. Die Vorteile separater Zugangsdaten (bzw. einer Nicht-Kopplung an Telefonnummern) zeigen sich vor allem auch dann, wenn das Smartphone mal nicht verfügbar ist (genau wie bei Email).
Um mit WhatsApp-gewöhnten Leuten zu schreiben (einzeln oder in Gruppen) empfehle ich den betreffenden Leuten gerne Signal. Die Lern- und Hemmschwelle ist dann gleich Null, weil es einfach fast identisch zu WhatsApp aussieht und funktioniert und dazu noch ist die App werbe- und kostenfrei.
Solange "Moxie" aus Signal kein dezentrales Netzwerk macht, halte ich von Signal aus bildungspolitischen Gründen kaum etwas: hier wie da ist man abhängig von einem zentralisierten Dienst. Aber gut, es mag schlimmere Möglichkeiten geben, sich abhängig zu machen. Was ich sagen will: wenn man schon überzeugen muss, dann doch wenigstens so, dass im Blick auf zivilgesellschaftliche Kontrolle wirklicht etwas gewonnen wird (also: dezentrale/föderale Netze nutzen).
