Diese Aussage stimmt nur bedingt. Es gibt freie (libre) Hardware, nur will die Kosten dafür zur Zeit noch kaum jemand bezahlen.
Wenn du dir mal die POWER9 Architektur anschaust, dann findest du dort eine Hardware die so weit als "frei" bezeichnet werden kann, dass die FSF diese in ihren Newslettern bewirbt.
Obwohl die Hardware nicht "frei" sein mag, ist das Librem5 Wahrscheinlich eines der ersten Smartphones, die eine überfällige Änderung in der Hardware mitbringt. Beim Librem5 wird eine Trennung zwischen LTE Modem und CPU hergestellt und es gibt die Möglichkeit die Komponenten, die man gerade nicht benutzen möchte, über einen Hardware Schalter an- oder auszuschalten.
