Ich habe es geschafft, 80jährigen Senioren remote über Telefon (klicke hier, klicke da) riot.im beizubringen - das wäre bei XMPP chancenlos gewesen.
Fehler bei Matrix/Riot erlebe ich **nur** in verschlüsselten Gruppenchats, bei denen ca. 50 Leute jeweils 3-4 verschiedene Endgeräte nutzen. Da kollidieren Sicherheit und Praktikabilität der Verschlüsselung. Ansonsten laufen Server und Clients seit ca. 2 Jahren störungsfrei.

Sicher sind das am Ende immer sehr subjektive Entscheidungen, aber nach einem Jahr überzeugter "XMPP-Jüngerschaft" (eigener Server und sämtliche Verwandtschaft und Freundeskreis genötigt, diesen zu nutzen) habe ich bez. XMPP frustriert das Handtuch geworfen, nachdem ich anfing, Apple-Hardware zu leihen (!), um dann selbst festzustellen, dass XMPP (damals, Mitte 2017) mit ChatSecure absolut nicht zumutbar war. Matrix war dann jedenfalls im Vergleich eine "Erlösung", die ich unter https://www.kuketz-blog.de/messenger-matrix-das-xmpp-fuer-hobby-admins/ zur Diskussion gegeben habe: Der Server lief an einem Nachmittag und der Referenz-Client Riot funktioniert plattformübergreifend tadellos. Das ist ein Traum für jeden Hobby-Admin.
Von daher kann ich Ilus Einschätzung nur bestätigen: Es ist wirklich frustrierend, wenn eine Idee in der Theorie so überzeugende Idee wie XMPP in der Praxis so dermaßen scheitert. Und spätestens im Vergleich zu Slack gewinnt man mit XMPP kaum einen Blumentopf - auch "Kollaborationsfähigkeiten" sollte jedoch ein moderner Messenger abdecken und das tut Matrix mit Riot erstklassig.
Das schöne ist, dass es keinen Grund für Grabenkämpfe gibt. Soll halt jeder sein Universum nutzen, den Rest erlidgen Bridges. Dass ab und zu mal Nachrichten verloren gehen ist zu verkraften (denn genau das habe ich bei XMPP ständig erlebt, von daher ist es bez. der XMPP-Kontakte kein Nachteil, denn die, die auf XMPP bestehen, können ja offensichtlich mit Nachrichtenverlust gut leben).
Metadaten kann keines der derzeit verbreiteten Systeme vermeiden. Briar soll insofern eine interesssante Alternative sein, habe ich aber noch nicht getestet.
briar steht bei mir auch noch auf der todo liste.
Solange Briar 1. nur für Android verfügbar ist und 2. keinerlei Mediendateien verschickt und 3. nichtmal Links parst (um Medien wenigstens verlinken zu können), bleibt Briar ein Messenger für sehr besondere Einsatzszenarien, Alltag gehört jedenfalls nicht dazu. Dennoch: Spannendes Projekt, für dessen Entwicklung ich sehr dankbar bin.
