Would it be possible to tag subject lines in list messages? Presumably the list admin would set this in

You could use the List-Id header to filter or tag according to your choice. That said, it would be good if its description changed to "FSFE Discussion" (most significant words first) rather than "General discussion list for the FSFE".
Hope that helps,

I could, but I ask because pretty much every other Mailman list I read includes the list name in the subject line and it's really convenient when looking over the inbox.

I'd like to second this request because I would prefer to visually separate the emails from my inbox, rather than get my mail client to filter them away from the inbox, and I would need a tag in the subject line to do that.
thanks in advance ...
ana

You could switch to a different mail client, such as mutt, which provides the functionality of highlighting emails in colour. I believe Thunderbird and Outlook offer the same.

I moved *from* Mutt *to* Gmail. Now I actually manage to keep up with my mail.
(I love replies to feature requests that say "You don't actually want to do what you want to do, you want to do what *I* do.")

That's unfortunate, because (if I understand rightly) gmail offers very little control over how messages are processed.
If I'm wrong, and gmail *does* offer a lot of control, then please use that control to control your mail the way you're wanting to do.

Notice that it is you asking for *everyone's* mail from this list to be affected, just to suit the way *you* want it to appear.
That's far better solved by presentation in *your* mail client, because doing so doesn't impose anything on anyone else. The messages already contain exactly the right information to do so: a field that uniquely identifies the list from which the message came.

Then please solve the problem at your mail client end, without asking for something that imposes such visual noise on the rest of us.

You appear to be using a Thunderbird-based mail client. Tagging is one of the features of Thunderbird promoted on http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/features.html but I can't find more info to see whether it can add text as well as colour. If not and you want it, sending in a feature request may help, or you can lead its development yourself.
The gmail-using OP probably can only send in a feature request, though. Such are the limitations of using non-free software.
Which reminds me: I'm currently using Heirloom mailx over IMAP for lists and patched it to display arbitrary headers (such as list-id) in the summary. I'll tidy and resubmit the patch if anyone wants it.
Regards,

It's possible. I'd really prefer this *not* happen, though.
* If you want to filter by list, use the 'List-Id' field in every message header. Heck, if you want the message treated specially in any way based on which list it came from, use the 'List-Id' field.
* Messages and threads sent to multiple lists with this subject munging quickly accumulate subject-line cruft from all of them.
