Conferencia Internacional de Software Libre Cuba

You are an enthusiast of Free Software? Come to Cuba! The User Group of Free Technologies (GUTL)[1] from Cuba and Best Of Open Technologies (BOOT e.V.) [2] from Germany, are glad to invite you to join the International Free Software Conference in Cuba in April 2016. Why in Cuba? Unfortunately the majority of large Free Software Conferences take place in rich countries. People from poor countries like Cuba normally are prevented to participate not only by financial reasons but also by denying the entry visa to countries like USA, Canada or most European countries. So we decided to turn it upside down and have an International Free Software Conference in Havana, Cuba. We invite free software enthusiasts from all over the world to participate, show what they are working on and educate each other. The idea is not only to exchange experiences how to apply the newest and “smartest” Free and Open-Source Software, but also to consider old hardware and very low bandwidth. Furthermore we want to talk about how Free Software can help developing countries in general. For example: Experiences on using Free Software in social projects. Experiences of small companies using Free Software to compete on the world market. How the use of Free Software in educational institutions is economically favorable. It will be perfect if all continents are represented and we want to have a high representation of women. We do not want to exclude anyone for economical reasons, so we will try to raise money to support travel expenses for those who need it. The conference will take three days: On the first day there will be a fixed program and keynotes. The second day will be held in an unconference* style. On the third day there will also be workshops and sprints. The event will be bilingual (English and Spanish). How your group can help with the organisation of the event: Spreading and promoting the conference. Prepare a presentation which describes the role of Free Software in your country. Prepare a presentation about new technology. With the participation of volunteers. PS: since we get the question a lot: No goverments, are involved in organising this conference - all organisers are working on this conference in their sparetime and no one is getting paid for it.

Free Software Community in Spain

Hi there, in the next time I'm going to spend some time in Spain and so I wondered if there are many people interested in Free Software there, especially in Valencia, where I am at the moment. The mailing list fsfe-es seems somewhat abandoned and it is not easy to find information on the internet because my spanish is still not too good. But I as far as I noticed, Free Software should be kind of a big thing in Spain. Kind Regards, David

[32C3] Call for sessions at FSFE assembly - December 27-30

Dear community, >From December 27-30 2015, there will be the 32nd Chaos Communication Congress (32C3) [1] in the Congress Center of Hamburg where FSFE is happy to host an "assembly". Such assemblies are community organised spaces inside the congress and the FSFE assembly [2] will offer an information booth, self-organised sessions and a sitting corner for all friends of Free Software to come together, meet or simply relax. To foil the title of this years CCC ("Gated Communities"), we are delighted to offer our community some self-organised sessions at our assembly and we look forward to your contributions. Depending on your session they will either take place directly at our assembly or in a dedicated workshop room. These sessions can be hands-on workshops, inspiring talks, community or developer meetings or any other public activity. Topics can be anything that is related to Free Software, from your private project to global communities. We welcome technical talks as well as we encourage to give non-technical talks to address philosophical, political or economic backgrounds of Free Software / Free Society. If you are interested in hosting a session, please apply no later than * Sunday, November 22, 18:00 UTC * by sending an email to eal(a)fsfe.org with the subject "Session at 32C3" including a short description and/or slides that you like to use so we have a rough idea what your session is about. Free software gains ground in the Italian public administration

All public administrations must opt for free software or re-use whenever possible,” said Carlo Piana, Free Software Foundation Europe’s general counsel, who participated in the committee that advised on the guideline. “Now free software and re-use are the norm, proprietary software the exception. This is the most advanced affirmative action in Europe so far. I’m so proud that Italy leads the way, for once,” he added. India: free software mandatory for public offices

Howdy all, The push for software freedom in government continues. With this announcement, the Indian Govt. is following the steps of nations like Germany and UK. The financial benefit of using open source is the primary reason behind the drive. “Organizations worldwide have adopted innovative alternative solutions in order to optimise costs by exploring avenues of “Open Source Software”. GoI has also been promoting the use of open source technologies in the e-Governance domain within the country in order to leverage economic and strategic benefits.” – the charter reads. “Adopt open standards and promote open source and open technologies”, it boldly states. The nature of compliance has been set to “mandatory” indicating the Govt. is serious on implementing the policy. In turn, that has happened because of inspiration from similar success in European countries. HP's Martin Fink arguing for copyleft licenses

LWN has an interesting article "Permissive licenses, community, and copyleft" <https://lwn.net/Articles/660428/>. It is about a talk by HP's Chief Technology Officer Martin Fink: He then ended the session with an extended appeal to move the open-source software industry away from permissive licenses like Apache 2.0 and toward copyleft licenses like the GPL. Not doing so, he said, puts the FOSS community at just as much risk of collapse as license proliferation threatened to in years past.
