about "I love Free Software" Day 2019

Dear FSFE Community, As February 14th, most commonly known as the "I love Free Software" Day is around the corner, I am contacting you with a warm invitation to participate in the online and/or offline promotion of the day. As in previous editions, the campaign foresees spreading the visuals and graphics of the "I love Free Software" Day initiative (which will also include pictures & videos when possible) on various social media platforms, websites, blogs, and etc. The offline campaign envisages spreading the word by giving away stickers, balloons, sending postcards and taking photos of the Free Software fans with versions of the slogan, which will also be involved in the online outreach. Additionally, some Free Software supporters will hold a short talk/presentation about the benefits of software freedom in front of students in a few tech oriented universities. In case, you would be able to find time to share and spread the love for Free Software locally, or why not even globally, online and/or offline, please send me an email back. I will make sure you receive a supporter package with materials and coordinate possible further actions with you. Wiki loves IloveFS-day : )

Hi all, I guess you all know that on February 14 there will be another I love Free Software day. Which goes perfect together with a current "photographic contest organized by Wikimedia community to document love testimonials in various cultures and regions of the world": https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Love_2019 Wikimedia Commons is the database of pictures that are used in the wikipedia. They regularly do contests to get pictures from monuments and other areas of Wikipedian interest. But in contrast to them this contest is not limited to "sites, whether of regional or national importance but on the widest variety of love testimonials possible. This means that most users will be able to find several pertaining subjects close to them, whether heritage sites or daily life event." Means that you can do a picture of your IloveFS-day contribution or of your group and upload it to wikimedia : ) The contest is running from February 1 to 28. vscode - any known Free Software builds/packages?

Hi, there is an MIT licensed base version called "vscode" which the proprietary version of Microsoft Visual Studio Code is based, which seems to be getting more popular. Does somebody know of Free Software re-building or packaging efforts? FSFE publishes expert brochure about “Public Money? Public Code!"

Hi all, convincing decision-makers why more public code would benefit us all should be easy. There are so many good arguments for putting publicly funded code under a Free Software licence: Tax savings, transparency, and innovation – just to name a few. But, in practice, we experienced that there are still a lot of basics that need to be explained. Starting with: What is Free Software? To help with this and in preparation for the upcoming elections of the EU parliament, we compiled a policy brochure that presents the most important facts and arguments about publicly funded code. Today, we publish it [1] under a Creative Commons licence so that you and everyone else are free to use it as support for convincing candidates. Annual report "software freedom in Europe 2018"

Hello everybody, Today we published our annual report "software freedom in Europe 2018" <https://fsfe.org/news/2018/news-20181105-01.html>. "Software freedom in Europe" is the yearly report of the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE). In one document, it gives you a breakdown of important things the FSFE has done and achieved during the last 12 months. In the 2018 report, you will read about our electoral campaigns, our input on the European Union's copyright reform, and about our successful outreach in demanding publicly financed software be made publicly available under a Free Software licence. You will also get insights about the events we (co-)organised and about our community and groups that helped us with these achievements. Finally, we will display some numbers showing what resources we counted on, and giving an outlook for the next year. I am proud what our teams accomplished during the last 12 months; no matter if it was the members of the General Assembly, one of our working groups, our web or translators team, a local group team, one of the booth teams, or in another way. And I would like to thank those of you who contributed as volunteers to the FSFE's activities, as well those of you who have donated to the FSFE, or support us regularly financially as supporters. Looking forward to another 12 months in which we will improve the situation for software freedom. resigning as Fellowship representative

(I would kindly request that my signed resignation be forwarded unaltered to all registered fellows/supporters not on the mailing lists.) Dear fellows, Given the decline of the Fellowship and FSFE's migration of fellows into a supporter program, I no longer feel that there is any further benefit that a representative can offer to fellows. With recent blogs, I've made a final effort to fulfill my obligations to keep you informed. I hope fellows have a better understanding of who we are and can engage directly with FSFE without a representative. Fellows who want to remain engaged with FSFE are encouraged to work through your local groups and coordinators as active participation is the best way to keep an organization on track. This resignation is not a response to any other recent events. From a logical perspective, if the Fellowship is going to evolve out of a situation like this, it is in the hands of local leaders and fellowship groups, it is no longer a task for a single representative. There are many positive experiences I've had working with people in the FSFE community and I am also very grateful to FSFE for those instances where I have been supported in activities for free software. Going forward, leaving this role will also free up time and resources for other free software projects that I am engaged in. I'd like to thank all those of you who trusted me to represent you and supported me in this role during such a challenging time for the Fellowship. to git or not to git

This is the question. Or, better, to github or not to github. Once upon a time, github was a bad hosting site, because the site code is not free, and we should have rather preferred gitorious. I did. But then gitorious closed shop and I had to go to the various projects (hosted elsewhere) that had submodules and make a commit to change the link. Not many projects, I admit, but still an unpleasant operation. Besides, all past history is now broken because of the dangling submodule link. I'm able to bisect anyways, but will my user be able too? And this problem is replicated for all repo owners. Not nice. So, besides self-hosting (unfeasible for whole-kernel repos) I moved to github. Well, not using it other than as a git repo why should I care that the code (that I do not use) is not free? Maybe because I contribute visibility to that specific unfree provider, but they were "friendly" guys. Now, they are microsoft. Same people. Same site. Different owner, different money-flow. Shall I (we) change attitude? Most smart people say no, that nothing changed. I'm aware the new owner is not worse than most other companies -- but they are the same ones who wanted to kill us out of the market, before turning into friends who still would love if we disappeared. So, I feel a little uneasy, and I'm now wondering where to push my yet-unpushed projects (while keeping previous stuff on github for several reasons -- mostly link-rusting issues). How does the free software community feels in this respect? thanks /alessandro
