Fairphone - a free Android device?

I just received my Fairphone. It came with a widget to "install Google apps" - when I clicked it, I was told that the phone is missing important functionality as it does not include Google apps, which they "unfortunately" don't have a license to distribute. I then deleted the widget. In th instruction folder under "your rights", we're told that all applicable software licenses are in the "Legal information" section under the "about phone" entry in the settings. Entering there, I find that the only point is "Open Source Licenses". These are listed in a not very intuitive way, but seems mostly to be GPL and standard Android/Apache licenses. So apparently the Fairphone does not have any proprietary software installed by default. GPGTools

I have a question and or a request for information. I came across GPGTools which looks like a very good implementation of the command line to a GUI (I find GUI easier to work with when learning and know many users are petrified of a command line). I have downloaded the tools from Kleopatra and so forth before for Windows. On Linux, I use the command line. So, is there as succesful an implementation of GPG tools that runs on Windows or Linux? Or is anybody aware of any projects that are attempting to do the same thing, albeit for different operating systems as GPGTools is only for Mac OSX. It would help greatly if anyone can assist me with this query as I have personally just got me head around PGP and I am encouraging peers to use it however, the feedback has been along the lines of they cannot use a command line and find Kleopatra and the bundled tools clunky and error prone. Fwd: Most 'Free' Linux distro

What is regarded as the most free linux distro? Would it be Linux from scratch with only free software added to it or otherwise? Is there an already existing distro that is in line with the FSF ideals? I use Debian for servers at the moment and I am looking into Debian or Arch as a desktop distro.

Single source strategies / Document conversion?

Hi all, I hope someone of you has got experience with this subject: A department wants to unify its documentations. What's existing are 500+ MS Word documents written in a unified template. What they search: a way to generate different documents from single sources (user, teacher, support, in-line help for programs) and a "database" that enables access via search, index and keywords. Sounds very much like a jack of all trades to me, but maybe some of you know a feasible approach? Best wishes Michael

Fwd: PGP Signing

Okay, so I've managed to set up PGP as per the documentation. My question is how does signing work and when someone signs my key, does it go like this: 1. I send them my public key, 2. They sign it. 3. They send me back the exported signed key, which now has their signature. 4. I then import this into my keychain, and reupload it to a key server and as an armoured file onto my website or wherever I post it for download.

Bundesregierung font license

Hello Fellows, I know some people on this list are in contact with German official representatives I'd like to raise this question: Can my government [1] commission the creation of a font and not have the rights for it? As a German citizen I want this released under a free license like OFL. The current font license says: 'Copyright (c) 2011 Juergen Huber, Martin Wenzel' Here is what those authors say: '... The project was to cover all communication issued by the government and their ministries, online or offline, national or international. It was a demanding and interesting task. Airport alternative

I need something to do what it does, similarly but cannot think of a simple solution off the top of my head. Simply a router to work on an existing set up that can connect via Wifi and therefore extend the network and allow me to have a private sub network with a hard drive and printer attached to the Airport alternative, allowing me to have my own private network drive and printer on a university network.
